이문구 소설의 이야기성에 관한 두 가지 고찰 (A Study on the Story of Lee Mun-Gu's Novels in Two Aspects)

초록

이 글의 첫 번째 문제의식은 문학교육과 문학사의 현장에서 본 이문구 소설 접근방식이다. 이문구 소설이 교육 정전으로 다뤄지는 주된 이유와 근거는 문학사에서 이문구 소설을 평가하는 대목과 차이가 있다. 일반적으로 작품의 문학사적 위상과 평가는 변하기 마련이며, 교육 정전의 가치와 문학사적 평가가 반드시 동궤를 이루는 것은 아니다. 그러나 활발하게 인용되는 교육 정전으로서의 이문구 소설에 비해 문학사에서의 그것은 비주류성 내지 이중적 평가가 불식되지 않고 있다. 생활사박물관을 연상케 하는 풍부한 재현성, 소설과 실제 삶을 통해 구원의 인간상을 추구한 진실성, 한국 소설사의 지평을 개성적으로 확장한 문체와 전통의 예술성을 공히 인정하면서도 평가의 준거를 어디에 두느냐에 따라 무게중심이 달라지는 형국의 근원에 이야기성과 소설관의 차이가 존재한다.
이 글의 두 번째 문제의식은 그간 이문구 소설의 평가 준거로 삼은 두 가지 측면, 즉 서사성과 이야기성에 관련한 것이다. 여기서는 이론적 탐색보다 구체적 텍스트를 통해 개념 및 평가에 도달하는 과정을 주목했다. 구술적 서사 전통(혹은 구술성)에 기반을 둔 이문구 소설이 예의 두 가지 측면에서 각각 논거로 어떻게 활용되는지 그 양상을 추적하고 타당성을 살펴보았다. 사투리와 비속어를 끌어들이는 언어의 민중성, 인물의 생애 혹은 포폄(褒貶)을 엮는 구성의 삽화성 저변에는 구술 전통과 그것의 근대적 변용이라는 원리가 작동하는바, 이를 작품의 사례로 실증하고, 이문구의 작가의식 및 서술 층위와 만나는 지점을 의미화함으로써 이문구 소설에 대한 한국문학의 시야가 폭넓게 조망될 필요를 강조하였다.

영어초록

The first problematic consciousness of this study concerned an approach in Lee Mun-gu's novels in the fields of literary education and history. There are differences between the major reasons and grounds behind the status of his novels educational canons and the evaluations of his novels in nature and status in the history of literature. In general, the status and evaluation of a work is subject to changes in the history of literature. The values of educational canons are not always in the same trajectory of evaluations in the history of literature. Lee's novels are, however, continuously placed outside the mainstream or subjected to dual evaluations in the history of literature despite the fact that they are actively cited as educational canons. His novels are actually recognized for their rich reproducibility, which reminds readers of a museum of life history, their veracity of pursuing the salvation image of man through novels and actual life, and their artistry in his style of writing and heritage that broadened the horizon in the history of Korean novels. However, the center of gravity varies according to the criteria of evaluation. At the root of this situation are the Story and differences in the viewpoint of novels.
The second problematic consciousness of the study concerned narrativity and story, which are two aspects used as criteria to assess his novels. Here, the study focused on the process of reaching concepts and evaluations through specific texts rather than theoretical inquiries. The study traced the patterns of his novels based on the oral narrative tradition(or orality) being utilized as grounds for arguments in these two aspects, examining their validity. There are the oral tradition and its modern transformation at the bottom of the Populism of language, which brings in dialects and slangs, and the Episode of organization to connect the lives or praise and censure of individuals. The study demonstrated it empirically with cases of works and signified the points where Lee's consciousness as a writer met the narrative layers, emphasizing a need to broaden the viewpoint of Korean literature for his novels.
