Innovation Management based on Stakeholder Theory: With Cases of the Car Safety Movements and Electric Car

In modern industrial societies, innovation has emerged as one of the most prominent features of them. Because of the limited vision and resources, firms fail to pursue all the new knowledge and technology that are promising, being able to be developed into “radical” innovation. We claim that innovation management based on stakeholder theory can be useful to identify potential radical innovation opportunities.
The existing theories of innovation management focusing on the traditional values and economic stakeholders revealed serious limitations in explaining and predicting radical or disruptive innovations. A society is composed of diverse socio-economic groups. Some active groups are leading in obsoleting traditional values, emphasizing new values and changing government policies. With the drastic changes of socio-economic environment, we claim our framework can help entrepreneurs to identify new innovative solutions that can improve traditional and non-traditional values of its idiosyncratic key stakeholders. Cases of the car-safety movement in 1965 and the reemergence of “electric cars” will be discussed as an illustration of our theoretical arguments. In this article, we try to show that innovation management based on stakeholder theory can provide tools for diagnosing disruptive innovations and surviving tough moments. Our research implicitly means that, by managing the firm under the word of God, the manager can evade failure caused by disruptive innovations and protect his firm.
