소설 '호랑이를 덫에 가두면'에 나타난 옛이야기의 힘과 리미널리티 공간 (The Power of Old Stories and Liminality in Long Novel When You Trap a Tiger)

초록

본고는 태 켈러의 장편소설 호랑이를 덫에 가두면을 통해 할머니로부터 전해들은 옛 이야기가 과도(過渡)공간을 통해 새로운 인격체로 성장해 가는 매개가 되는 것을 확인하 고 그 의미를 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 옛이야기는 신화, 설화, 민담과 같이 동일한 구조 를 가지고 인간 무의식에 응축된 힘을 발휘한다. 또한 환상을 통해 나타나는 상징적 동물 은 인간 무의식에서 또 다른 모습으로 표출되어 나타나고, 삶과 죽음의 경계에 놓이며 생 존해 왔던 인류의 집단적 무의식과도 연결된다. 특히 한국의 전통을 가지고 이민자의 삶 을 사는 이들에게 나타나는 상징적 표상은 하나의 의미가 아닌 다층적 의미를 가진다.
‘조용한 아시아 여자애’라는 의미로 ‘조아여(Jo-a-yeo)’라는 별명을 가진 주인공 릴리는 뇌종양에 걸린 할머니의 죽음 앞에서 정신적 혼돈상황에 처하게 되고 이 상황은 주인공을 포함함 가족 각각의 내면을 열어 보이는 계기가 된다. 또한 할머니와 이웃하던 등장인물 들의 마음을 움직여 새로운 변화 가능성을 열어준다. 이 과정에서 옛 이야기는 서로의 무 의식을 연결하는 중요한 통로가 된다. 이야기 속에 등장한 ‘호랑이’는 릴리 안에 웅크리고 있던 릴리의 또 다른 모습이기도 하고 한국 민족의 집단 무의식이기도 하다. 릴리는 호랑 이의 요구대로 할머니의 이야기를 세상에 풀어 놓는 과정을 통해 ‘조아여’라는 틀을 벗고 사교적이고 당당한 인격체로 거듭난다. 이로써 자신의 정체성 회복은 물론 가족과의 완전 한 이해관계를 실현시킨다.
주인공의 무의식에서 발현된 호랑이는 지하실과 도서관 등에 등장하며 이들 공간을 리 미널리티(liminality)를 수행하는 공간으로 만든다. 이 공간적 자극을 통해 릴리는 이야기를 풀어 놓게 되고 할머니의 죽음과 인간 삶의 의미를 이해하게 된다. 또한 이 이야기의 효과가 한 사람의 이해관계와 변화에 그치지 않고 주인공과 할머니를 둘러싼 많은 등장인물 들의 변화 가능성을 이끌어 내고 있다는 것이다. 이것이 곧 이야기의 힘이다. 이야기가 발 생되고 전달되는 공간 또한 특정장소에 멈추어 있지 않고 집단 무의식을 통해 살아나고 재생산 된다. 그러므로 소설 속 등장인물들이 이야기를 통해 문제해결의 단서를 찾아 변 화되고 성장하며, 다시 이야기를 창출하고 전달하는 이러한 과정은 인류의 보편적 삶의 과정이자 가장 영속적인 행위라는 가치를 발견하는 유의미한 과정이 될 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to confirm how the stories passed down from grandmother play the mediating role in how the main character grows into a new person as she goes through transitional space in Tae Keller’s long novel When You Trap a Tiger as well as to understand the meaning behind this role. Old stories possess the structure idential to those of myths, fables, and folktales, and wield the power condenced within the human unconscious. Additionally, the sympbolic animal manifested through an illusion is expressed in a different image within the human unconscious and this representation is connected to the collective unconscious of humans who have survived while being faced with the edge of life and death. The symbolic representation expressed among those who live the life of immigrants with Korean traditions especially has a multilayered meanings rather a single meaning.
The main character Lily, whose nickname is ‘Jo-a-yeo’, is confronted by a mental breakdown as she face the loss of her grandmother to a brain tumor and this circumstance acts as an opportunity for each member of the family, including Lily herself, to reveal his or her inner sides. This also moves the hearts of her grandmother’s neighbors allowing a possibility for a new change to open up. In the process, the old stories act as an important channel linking the unconscious of each individual. The ‘tiger’ from the story is another form of Lily that had been cowering up inside her as well as the collective unconscious of the Korean people. By releasing the story of her grandmother as requested by the tiger, Lily breaks free from the confining frame of ‘Jo-a-yeo’ and becomes a sociable and confident person. By doing so, she not only rehabilitate her identity but also realizes a completely aligned interests with her family.
The tiger manifested within the main character’s unconscious appears in places including the basement and the library and turns this place into a communitas space conducting liminality. Through this spatial stimulation, Lily unfolds the storeis and understand the meaning of her grandmother’s death as well as human life. This in turn inditcates that the influence of this story does not stop at bringing the change among an individual’s interests but also reaches out to draw forth the potential for changes in many other characters surrounding the main character and her grandmother. This, namely, is the power of a story. It means that the space where the stories are created and delivered does not stay fixed in certain place but rather becomes reborn and reproduced through the collective unconscious. This process of recreating and conveying stories can be considered as the conventional process of life among the humanity as well as the process through which we discover the value that is the most perpetual practice.
