초록

이 글은 1712년 謝恩兼冬至使에 동행한 金昌業과 崔德中의 燕行錄 속 조선 지식인의 康熙帝 인식을 구체적으로 검토한 것이다. 적대적이고 모순적이었던 강희제에 대한 조선 지식인의 인식은 강희 말년 연행사의 防禁 조치가 완화됨에 따라 균열이 생겼다. 제한적인 공간에서 간접적으로만 청을 마주한 이전 시기와 달리, 직접 청인과 소통하고 청의 문화와 문물을 경험하기 시작한 것이다. 그 결과 김창업과 최덕중은 강희제의 다양한 면모를 직ㆍ간접적으로 파악했다. 이들은 강희제의 儉約ㆍ勸農ㆍ崇儒를 통한 愛民과 孝 실천의 면모를 긍정적으로 논했고, 동시에 謙讓이 부족하고 驕慢한 태도를 지적했다. 華夷論에 따른 反淸 의식을 유지하면서도, 청의 현실을 직시한 순간이었다.
이러한 조선 지식인의 강희제 인식은 이후에도 계속됐다. 강희제가 盤遊하고 荒淫을 일삼는다고 지적하면서도, 유학을 숭상하고 文治로 나라를 다스림을 인정하는 양상이 이어졌다. 이후 雍正帝가 즉위하자, 강희제의 긍정적인 면모는 더욱 강조됐다. 옹정제가 조선을 압박함에 따라 옹정제에 대한 부정적 기류가 형성됐고, 그에 대한 반작용으로 강희제가 호의적인 맥락에서 소환됐다. 이후 연행사가 논한 강희제의 긍정적인 면모는 김창업과 최덕중의 강희제 인식과 흡사하다. 즉, 1712년 작성된 연행록이 일정 부분 조선 지식인에게 영향을 미쳤고, 청의 실상을 파악하는 도약이 된 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

This paper is aimed at specifically reviewing the perception of the Kangxi Emperor(康熙帝) as shown in the Yeonhaengrok[燕行錄] of Kim Chang-up(金昌業) and Choi Duck-joong(崔德中), who accompanied the Saeun-Dongji sahaeng delegation[謝恩兼冬至使] in 1712. Joseon intellectuals’ hostile and contradictory perception toward the Kangxi Emperor began to crack following the easing of the ban on Joseon Yeonhaeng delegation’s attempt to get out of their quarters in the Qing Dynasty, which was imposed in the last years of Kangxi’s reign. Unlike the previous period when they had only encountered the Qing indirectly in a limited space, they began to face reality by communicating with Qing people and experiencing their culture and the products of their civilization.
As a result, Kim Chang-up and Choi Duck-joong grasped the various aspects of the Kangxi Emperor directly and indirectly. The aspects of the Kangxi Emperor’s love for the people and his practice of filial piety shown by encouraging farming, and promoting Confucianism were discussed positively, but at the same time, his lack of humility and his arrogant attitude were pointed out as well. While they could not help but be surprised by the appearance of the Confucian monarch, both the anti-Qing sentiment and the sino-centric world view still continued. It was a moment when Joseon intellectuals began to face the reality of the Qing Dynasty while maintaining their unique anti-Qing ideology.
This perception of the Kangxi Emperor by Joseon intellectuals continued thereafter. The Kangxi Emperor’s pleasure-seeking and debauchery were pointed out, and at the same time, it was also acknowledged that he revered Confucianism and ruled his country through civil administration. After the death of the Kangxi Emperor and the ascension of the Ongjeong Emperor[雍正帝], the positive aspects of the Kangxi Emperor were further emphasized among Joseon intellectuals.
As the Ongjeong Emperor put pressure on Joseon, a negative atmosphere toward the Ongjeong Emperor was formed, and in response, the Kangxi Emperor was recalled in a favorable context. The positive aspects of the Kangxi Emperor discussed by Yeonhaengsa thereafter are similar to the perception of the emperor by Kim Chang-up and Choi Duck-joong. In other words, it can be said that the Yeonhaengrok written in 1712 had a certain influence on Joseon intellectuals and became a leap forward in understanding the reality of the Qing Dynasty.
