초록

The narrator of Tess of the d'Uurvilles juxtaposes two seemingly contradictory narrations. One presents Tess as an object of desire from the masculine point of view and a passive victim. The other portrays Tess as an individual who tries to fulfil her own individual nature, more specifically, a “Pure Woman.” This apparent narrative contradiction, however, is not the result of Hardy’s inner division and inconsistency, but the outcome of Hardy’s narrative strategy.
Hardy makes an effective use of ‘nature’ as well as ‘light’ and ‘darkness’ image to faithfully present Tess as a “Pure Woman.” Tess is attracted to Angel in accordance with the universal and automatic tendency to satisfy appetite for joy under an irresistible law of ‘nature.’ Tess’s inner conflict between internalized conventional social law and law of nature is consistently implied in a symbolic pattern of ‘light’ and ‘darkness’ image. The love for Angel is a ‘light’ giving breath and life to Tess who is oppressed under a burden of ‘darkness’ of past. These images portray persuasively Tess’s love for Angel as her elementary need as a human being. They lead readers to regard Tess’s urgent act to fulfil her love at the risk of her life as a Pure Woman’s inevitable choice.
Hardy explores Tess’s purity in a more essential dimension by not limiting it to criticism of narrow sex/gender ideology. He conveys his vision of “Pure Woman” successfully through the creative use of images. It makes Tess of the d’Uurvilles a great novel appealing to the universal sensibilities of readers until now.
