소수의 의견은 항상 침묵하는가? 댓글의 예의·무례함과 소수 의견 지지비율이 소수 의견 입장자의 의견표현 의지에 미치는 영향 (Are Minority Opinions Always Hampered? The Influence of Civil/Uncivil Comments and Percentage of Minority Opinions on the Willingness to Express Opinions)

초록

본 연구는 댓글의 예의·무례함과 소수 의견 지지비율이 소수 의견 입장자의 의견표현에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 탐색하였다. 이를 통해 소수 의견 입장자가 어떠한 상황에서 자신의 의견을 표현하고자 하는지 확인하였다. 또한 부정적 정서와 사회적 지지의 매개효과를 살펴봄으로써 개인의 심리적 요인의 영향력을 검증하고자 하였다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 연구가설과 연구문제를 설정하고 2(예의 있는 댓글/무례한 댓글) × 3(소수 의견 지지비율 15%/30%/45%)의집단 간 실험 설계를 통해 검증하였다. 연구결과 무례한 댓글보다 예의 있는 댓글이 많을수록소수 의견 입장자의 의견표현의지가 더 높아지는 것으로 나타났으며, 소수 의견 지지비율이15%일 때보다 소수 의견 지지비율이 30%와 45%일 때 의견표현 의지가 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 하지만 소수 의견 지지비율이 30%와 45%는 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 발견되지 않았다. 또한 예의 있는 댓글 환경에서 소수 의견 지지비율이 30%일 때 다른 지지비율에 비해 상대적으로 높은 의견표현 의지를 나타냈다. 하지만 무례한 댓글 환경에서는 소수 의견 지지비율이 45%일 때 의견표현 의지가 가장 높았다. 매개효과 검증 결과 부정적 정서는 댓글의 예의·무례함과 소수 의견 입장자의 의견표현 의지간의 관계를, 소수 의견 지지비율과 소수 의견 입장자의 의견표현 의지간의 관계를 부분매개하는 것으로 나타났으며, 사회적 지지의 경우 소수 의견 지지비율과 소수 의견 입장자의 의견표현 의지의 관계에서만 부분 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 의의와 시사점을 논의했다.

영어초록

This study investigated how civility/incivility of comment and the percentage of minority opinions affect the willingness to speak out for minority opinion holders. By doing this, we explored the conditions for the minority opinion holders to speak out.
We focused on how civil and uncivil comments online affect the willingness of minority opinion holders to express their opinions on social media. We also examined the impact of the proportion of similar opinions in the comment section on the minority opinion holders' willingness to speak out. In addition, the mediating role of negative emotions and social support was examined in the proposed relationship.
The present study utilized a 2 (comment civility: civil vs. uncivil) ×　3(minority-supportive opinion proportion 15% vs. 30% vs. 45%) factorial design for the purpose of the study. The results are as follows: First, civil comments significantly led to higher likelihood of minority opinion holders’ willingness to speak out compared to uncivil comments. Second, minority opinion holders in the condition of 15% of supportive comments were less likely to express their opinions, compared to 30% and 45% of supportive comments. But there are no major differences between 30% versus 45% conditions in the willingness to speak out. Third, in the case of civil comments, minority opinion holders in the condition of 30% of supportive comments were most likely to speak out in public, compared to conditions of 15% and 45%. However, in the case of uncivil comments, those who read the 45% supportive comments showed the highest level of willingness to express their opinions than conditions of 15% or 30%. In addition, negative emotions, caused by uncivil comments discouraged the minority opinion holders’ willingness to speak out. Likewise, the higher presence of supportive opinions led to higher social support, which in turn increased the willingness to express their opinions publicly. On the other hand, civility of comments did not affect social support, and thus exerting no effect on the willingness of public expression. The significance and implications of the current study were discussed based on findings.
