인터넷 뉴스 댓글을 통한 정치커뮤니케이션 (Friends or Foes to Democratic Deliberation? : The Effects of Internet User Comments on the Perception of Media Bias and on Information Selection)

초록

본 연구는 인터넷 뉴스 댓글의 논조와 자신의 정치성향간의 일치 여부가 개인의 정치적 태도 형성에 영향을 미치는지, 나아가 정보 선택 과정에 어떻게 개입하는지를 분석한다. 인터넷 뉴스 기사에서 댓글은 특정 이슈를 해석하고 판단하는 인지적 틀(frame)로서 작용하여 개인의 기사 판단에영향을 미친다. 이를 검증하기 위해 본 연구는 무작위 추출된 패널 750명을 대상으로 가상 사이트의뉴스 자극물을 통한 온라인 실험연구를 진행하였다. 기사내용의 편파성에 대한 적대적 미디어 지각(HMP: Hostile Media Perception)과 정보습득 과정에서의 선택적 노출(SE: Selective Exposure) 경향을 분석하기 위하여, 댓글의 논조(중립, 진보, 보수)와 개인의 이념성향(중도, 진보, 보수)을 중요 요인(factor)으로 설계하였다. 분석 결과 적대적 미디어 지각은 댓글의 정치적 논조에 따라 달라졌고, 자신의 정치성향과 다른 논조의 댓글을 보았을 때, 그렇지 않은 경우보다 그 정도가 높다는것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 불일치에 대한 적대감이 반드시 선택적 노출로 이어지지는 않는다는사실을 발견했다. 본 연구는 인터넷 뉴스에서 댓글이 참여와 숙의적 정치커뮤니케이션에 가지는 함의를 살펴보았다는 데 의의를 가진다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine whether user comments on news articles have an effect on the reader’s perception on the bias of the news (HMP: Hostile Media Perception) and whether the perception influences reader’s selection process of the further news (SE: Selective Exposure). To examine these claims rigorously, we performed a series of online experiments, specifically designed 1) to test whether the subjects who are exposed to the same news article that are accompanied by user comments with different partisan tones perceive the bias of the news article differently, and 2) to examine whether the reader’s perceived bias of the news articles affect the subject’s additional information search process and whether the readers who perceived the news articles as biased select the news articles with similar partisan bent as the subject’s. To explain the underlying theoretical mechanisms of these two processes, we mobilized the theories on HMP and on Spiral of Silence. The experimental subjects were randomly selected and assigned into three groups and the same news articles with varying partisan user comments (neutral, liberal, conservative) were given to each group for reading. The main predictor variables include partisanship and socio-economic status of the subject. We used Ordinal Logit regression (for the analysis of HMP) and Poisson regression (for the analysis of SE) for statistical analyses. Our findings include: 1) partisan user comments have a positive effect on HMP, especially on the subjects with conservative leaning, which also increases when people read others' discordant comments rather than like-minded comments, and 2) HMP on discordant comments do not always drive selective exposure on further information selecting process.
