초록

본 논문은 정신분석학 개념인 ‘나르시시즘’을 통해 댄 그레이엄(Dan Graham, 1942-)의 작업에 드러난 주체의 다양한 양상들을 분석한 연구이다. 일반적으로 나르시시즘은 자기애를 의미하지만, 정신분석학에서는 자아가 자신의 이미지를 스스로와 동일시함으로써 주체성을 형성하는 심리 기제를 지칭한다. 본 연구는 이러한 정신분석학적 의미에서의 나르시시즘을 통해 관람자의 심리를 분석하고자 했다. 그레이엄의 작업에서는 관람자가 자신의 이미지와 대면하게 되는 자기반영적인 상황이 다양한 방식으로 조성되어 왔다. 그 결과, 오브제 대신에 매체에 반영된 자신의 모습에 초점을 맞추게 되는 관람자는 자기 이미지에 대한 심리적 주체로서 상정되었다. 이 같은 심리적 상황은 다른 관람자나 주변 환경에 대한 관람자의 지각반응과 겹쳐지면서 복잡하고 다양한 의미들을 형성했다. 본 논문은 이러한관람자의 심리경험을 주체이론으로 유명한 자크 라캉의 나르시시즘 개념을 통해살펴봄으로써 주체의 분열과 형성 등 주체의 여러 양상들을 그의 작품에서 발견하고자 했다.
그레이엄의 작업에서 발견되는 주체의 다양한 모습들 중에서 본 연구는 세지점에 주목했다. 첫째는 비디오설치에서 감지되는 근대적 주체 개념에 대한 작가의 회의적 태도이다. 비디오설치에서는 주체가 반영이미지와의 동일시에 실패하게 되는 상황이 조성되는데, 이 같은 나르시시즘의 좌절은 주체형성과정에 내재된주체의 분열을 환기시키는 것이었다. 따라서 이러한 주체의 분열이 자각되는 그의작업에서는 일관된 존재로 가정되는 근대적 주체 개념이 허구로 간주되고 거부됨을 알 수 있었다. 둘째는 퍼포먼스에서 타자와의 관계 속에서 변화되는 욕망의 주체로서의 모습이다. 그의 퍼포먼스에서는 주체의 분열이 타자의 응시와 언술에 의해 자각되는데, 그것은 주체성이 타자를 자신으로 오인하여 얻은 산물이라는 사실을 상기시키는 것이었다. 이러한 분열에 대한 자각으로 인해 퍼포먼스에서의 주체는 또 다른 타자와의 반복적인 동일시를 통해 주체성의 회복을 시도하는 모습으로 나타났다. 이로써 그의 퍼포먼스는 주체의 고유한 영역을 강조해 온 모더니즘적 주체 개념에 의문을 제기하고, 끝없이 변화하는 존재라는 새로운 주체 개념을제시하는 것으로 이해될 수 있었다. 셋째는 파빌리온 조각에서 주체가 주변 환경적 맥락에 의해 형성됨에 따라 다양한 양상들로 존재한다는 점이다. 그것은 주체가 주변 환경에 따라 변화되는 자신의 이미지와 동일시하는 과정으로 설명되는데, 이는 곧 주체란 맥락에 의해 새롭게 구축되는 존재임을 의미했다. 즉, 파빌리온조각 내부에 교차되는 사회, 문화, 역사 등의 여러 맥락들은 주체가 지니는 다양한 의미의 기원이 되는 것이었다.
이러한 과정을 통해 본 연구는 그레이엄이 오래전부터 여러 매체를 사용하여주체의 다양한 양상들을 다루어 왔음을 밝히고자 했다. 그 중에서도 본 논문은 그의 작업들이 근대적 주체 개념을 거부함에 따라 모더니즘적 주체에 대비되는 측면을 지님을 주목하였고, 나아가 주체가 끊임없이 변화되거나 맥락에 의해 형성되는 존재로 나타난다는 점에서 포스트모더니즘적 주체 개념을 다루고 있음을 드러내고자 했다. 이러한 의미에서 그의 작업들은 오늘날 미술사에서 전개되고 있는주체에 대한 논의를 예고할 뿐 아니라 포스트모더니즘 미술로 간주될 수 있다고생각된다. 따라서 본 논문은 심리적인 측면을 중심으로 그의 작업들이 새로이 해석될 수 있는 가능성을 제기하는 데 의의가 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to explore the works of Dan Graham, which have been in progress since 1970, through Narcissism. This paper is dedicated to finding the common ground which would provide an accurate and yet general understanding of his vast and diverse accomplishments. In order to do so, the researcher focused on the psychological experience of the observer that varies depending on the environments created by various mediums used in different genres of work. By applying psychoanalysis in this study, the following was observed; the psychological experience of the observer is closely related to the matters of the subject such as segmentation and formation.
Various forms of the subject are observed throughout his works in the perspective of Narcissism, a psychological mechanism in subject formation. In this paper, three particular areas were mainly discussed. First, skepticism over modern subjects was witnessed in his video works. In his video works, the situation where the subject failed to identify itself with the reflective image was repeated. This failure of Narcissism shows the inherent segmentation in the subject formation process. According to Jacques Lacan, the dissolution of the subject provides a foundation for the argument that the belief that modern subjects are an uniformed entity is only a myth. Second, the process of formation and reconstruction of the subject that took place while one was forming a relationship with others was a common theme found in his performances. In his performances, the segmentation of the subject was realized through self-perception caused by the gaze of the Other and the discourse of the Other. It reminds the fact that this process is an outcome of misrecognition when the subject perceives the Other as him/herself. In addition, another self-perception occurred to regain his/her subjectivity from the dissolved subject by identifying him/herself with another being. Third, according to his Pavilion sculptures plural subject formation was possible. The psychological experience in Pavilion sculptures unfolded itself by forming a Narcissistic relationship with the reflective image which was produced when the subject successfully assimilated itself to the surrounding. As a result, the subject was able to reconstruct a new meaning within the environmental context. In other words, various contexts such as society, culture and history that are interwoven in the Pavilion sculptures can be the origin of the new definition of the subject.
In conclusion, it is evident that Graham has dealt with the matters of subjectivity by applying various mediums. Also, the subjectivity in his work contrasts with modernism as it reveals skepticism over the existence of modern subjects and can be interpreted as part of post-modernism since it entails the process of constant reformation and redefinition of the segmented self under different circumstances. These properties of his works can be considered as the pioneering examples that set the foundation for the upcoming controversies on the subjectivity which are currently discussed in today’s art history. Finally, his works have introduced a new perspective to re-interpret and evaluate the works of art in terms of psychological values.
