光海君代 宮闕營建 再考 (The Reconsideration of Constructing the Palaces at Gwanghaegun' Period)

초록

광해군대의 궁궐공사는 그동안 풍수의 영향에 의한 것으로 평가되어 왔다. 『광해군일
기』에 유난히 자주 등장하는 術官들에 의해 궁궐 공사가 좌지우지 된 것처럼 기록되어 있기 때
문이다. 그러나 이들을 보다 면밀히 살펴보면, 왕기가 서려 경덕궁을 지었다는 설은 인조반정의
정당성을 확보하는데 이용된 것으로 여겨진다. 아울러 인경궁 역시 왕기가 서려있어 지은 것으
로 알려져 있지만, 조작된 것일 가능성이 높아 보인다. 결과적으로 보면 광해군대의 궁궐영건은
술관들을 활용하여 왕권강화책을 도모한 것으로 파악되기 때문이다.
광해군대 궁궐영건의 또 다른 의도는 청기와제작과 흠경각을 건축한 점을 통해 짐작할 수
있다. 청기와는 재료인 염초가 화약을 만드는데 소용되는 것이어서 조선전기부터 제작에 어려
움이 있었던 건축재 였다. 광해군대 들어서는 전쟁 직후여서 염초와 안료를 구하기 어려운데다,
조성기술 마저 단절되어 제작상의 어려움이 컸다. 광해군은 이러한 상황에도 불구하고 청기와
제작 전부터 화약제조를 명한데 이어 청기와를 제작하게 하였다. 따라서 청기와제작은 사치재
제작이라기 보다, 당시 첨단의 무기였던 화약제조와 관련된 일로 보이므로, 실리적 목적의 일로
여겨진다.
흠경각 조성은 창경궁재건 공사가 한창 진행 중이던 때에 따로 도감을 구성하여 진행하게
해, 원성을 샀다. 치세의 근본이던 농사짓는 일을 염두에 두지 않았다면 세울 리 만무하다는 점
을 염두에 둔다면 이 역시 상징적인 왕권강화책에서 한발 더 나아간 실리적인 목적에서 비롯된
일로 볼 수 있다.
한편, 광해군대 지어진 궁궐건축물 중 현존하는 것으로는 총 7동이 있다. 이들은 다포형식
이 정착되어 가는 단계를 보여준다는 점과 안초공의 등장 및 궁궐 정문의 우진각지붕 형식 등을
파악할 수 있게 한다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 특히, 창덕궁선정전은 조선의 궁궐건축 중 유일한
청기와집으로, 훼철되고 없는 인경궁의 청기와건물을 추정할 수 있게 한다는 점에서 의의가 있
다. 아울러 현존하는 창덕궁 선정전은 청기와로써, 1803년 불에 타 다시 지어진 것이라기보다
1648년 인경궁광정전을 옮겨 지은 것임이 밝혀졌다는 점에서도 의의가 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

The construction of the palaces at Gwanghaegun' period has been estimating as the
influence by the theory of divination based on topography during that time. Since there were
records which constructions of palaces were at the mercy of Sulgwan( geomancer) in
Gwanghaegun' dairy. However, If we study about this closely, we could easily guess that the
opinion of building the Gyeongdeok palace due to be the king vigor at Saemundong is
inferred as using the security of the justification of Injobanjeong. We have known that
Ingyeong palace was constructed because of the king vigor at the spot, However, when we
see the result of Gwanghaegun' dethronement, It would highly be faked. Because we are
thought as emphasising that Sulgwan(geomancer) had great influence when Gwanghaegun
built luxury and great constructions.
Heumkyeonggak which established the blue tile production and science appliance must
be thought in constructing palaces at Gwanghaegun' Period. Since Gwanghaegun' Period
was right after a war, there was no gunpowder and color available. In addition, it was very
difficult to make them since the skill which produce gunpowder and color ceased to exist. At
Gwanghaegun' Period since the manufacture of gunpowder was ordered before the
production of the bule tiles, the gunpowder and the manufacture of the blue tiles seemed to
be closely related. Therefore the production of the blue tiles seemed to be more related to
the manufacture of gunpowder which was the ultramodern weapon at that time than the
production of luxury materials. This is also thought as the thing of utilitarian purpose. And
Heumkyeonggak which was established in astronomies at king Sejong period was built in
the west of Kwangmyeongjeon of Kyeongbok palace. At that time since the reconstruction of
Changkyeong palace was in the middle of progressing, the construction of Heumkyeonggak
was very complained. Considering unless doing farming, the basis of the reign, was thoughtimportantly, Heumkyeonggak wouldn't build, it seemed that Heumkyeonggak was built for
the symbolic royal authority and utilitarian purpose.
There is significant in the respect of gasping the existing buildings of palaces at
Gwanghaegun' Period have shown the stage of being planted in Dapo style, the advent of
Anchogong, and ujingak roof style of palace front door. Especially, Sunjeongjon of
Changduk palace is the only bule tile house and we could infer the bule tile house of
Inkyeong palace which don't exist now. In addition We can infer that the existing
Sunjeongjon of Changduk palace is the blue building and this building was not rebuilt on
fire in 1803 but was built after Kwangjeonjon of Inkyeong palace was moved here.
This study has the significant in clearing up that the construction of palaces was not
simply the influence of the theory of divination based on topography but has the purpose of
strengthening of royal authority and utilitarian purpose by producing of blue tiles and
constructing of Heumkyeonggak.
