한국전쟁 체험담을 통해 본 역사 속의 남성과 여성- 우리 안의 분단을 넘어서기 위하여 (Men and Women in History Based on Experiences of the Korean War)

초록

이 연구에서는 현지조사를 통해 수집한 한국전쟁 체험담을 자료로 삼아 역사체험을 전하는 이야기에 있어 남성과 여성의 경험과 기억 및 말하기 방식에서 나타나는 특성을 살펴보았다. 한국전쟁이라는 역사적 사건에 대하여 남성과 여성이 서로 어떻게 다른 경험을 했으며, 그 경험을 어떻게 다르게 의미화하는지를 단면적으로 살펴보는 논의였다.
주요 한국전쟁 체험담 자료에 나타난 남성과 여성의 형상에는 지나칠 수 없는 큰 차이가 있었다. 그 차이를 핵심적으로 요약하자면, 여성들이 가족과 생활을 무겁게 짊어져 온 데 대하여 남성들은 대개 제 혼자 몸을 챙기며 전쟁 속을 움직여 왔다는 것이다. 전쟁 속의 여성들에게 있어 늘 그 곁에 남편과 자식, 시댁식구와 같은 가족이 있었고 그들을 챙기기 위한 분투가 이어졌던 것과 달리, 많은 남성들은 가족을 포함한 주변사람을 2차적 존재로 치부한 채 자신의 안위에 관심을 집중했던 것으로 나타나고 있다. 전쟁을 기억하고 말함에 있어 많은 여성들이 가족과 주변 사람을 떠올리고 그에 얽힌 고난을 이야기하는 데 비하여 남성들은 이야기의 중심에 대개 자기 자신이 있으며 전쟁의 경험을 하나의 흥미진진한 무용담처럼 구연하곤 한다. 이러한 차이는 역사적 삶에 있어 남성과 여성 사이에 삶의 분단 내지 서사의 분단이 가로놓여 있음을 단면적으로 보여주고 있다.
문제는 분단의 서사, 또는 서사의 분단이라고 하는 벽을 어떻게 허물어 넘어설까 하는 것인데, ‘나’와 함께 ‘또 다른 나’로서 가족을 몸과 마음으로 품어왔던 여성들의 삶에 작동해 온 ‘포용의 서사’를 주목해야 한다고 여겨진다. 닫힌 몸과 마음을 열어 나의 가족과 이웃을 끌어안는 노력이 이루어져야, 그렇게 내 안으로부터 열림이 이루어져야만 진정한 소통과 통합이 가능한 것이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study observed the characteristics shown in the experiences and method of speaking of the men and women in the stories that tell historical experiences by using the experiences of the Korean War gathered in field surveys as the material. Regarding the same historical events, this study observed how men and women had different experiences each other and they have given different meanings to the experiences.
There was a serious difference that could not be overlooked between men and women shown in the main documents of Korean War experiences. To sum up the main points of the difference, the women have shouldered the heavy responsibilities of their families and lives. In contrast, the men generally have taken care of themselves and moved around in the war. Women in the war always had families such as their husbands, children and in-laws and struggled to take care of them. On the other hand, this study showed that the men regarded others including their families as secondary, and then concentrated their attentions and behaviors on their own survival and progresses. In remembering and telling about the war, the women remembered their families and the people around them, and told about 'hardships' related to them. In comparison, the men put themselves in the core of the stories, and would remember and narrate them as if their war experiences were interesting the 'heroic exploits.' This difference has shown that internal divisions of life between men and women were extremely big.
The problem is how it will be possible to break down and transcend the barrier called the narrative of division, or division of narrative. For this, it is necessary to focus on the 'narrative of tolerance' working on the women's lives that have embraced their families with their minds and bodies as 'the other side of them.' It can be said that true communication and integration will be made only after opening their closed minds and bodies and cuddle their families, neighbor and people in this world, and achieving openness and integration inside themselves. Of course, it is required for the profound remorse for 'division inside us' that lies between the life and perception.
