This article examines the newly excavated new-style novel, 「Buyongdam」’s foundation of formation and narrative characteristics and explores what value it has in the history of Chuno(推奴; catching the escaping slave to send it back to the owner) novels based on that.
1. 「Buyongdam」 can be seen as a type of Chuno novel in that it deals with the conflict between the owner and the slave surrounding Chuswae(推刷). While revenging Chuno tales were being widely transmitted from the 18th century, 「Salsinseongin」 was published serially in 1906. And as 「Salsinseongin」’s first half was accepted and the tales like 「Jinsa Gwak’s son married to a slave daughter」 or 「The master’s son and the slave」 which edited the second half newly were generated, a new-style novel of 「Buyongdam」 came to be created in 1915 based on the new type of story.


2. 「Buyongdam」 is significant in many ways in that it is the only work that gropes for the reconciliation and coexistence between the owner and the slave among the Chuno novels, it completely settles the negative view to the slaves whose status had to be passed down with no exception then in the process of transmission described in the Chuno novels, and it lets us know the concrete cases of forked bargaining that were performed in some parties in the history of narrative literature about Chuno in the latter half of Chosun.
