초록

군왕 시편으로 분류되는 마소라 시편 110편은 ‘이방 민족들과의 성전(聖戰) 준비’(1-3절)와 ‘하느님의 전투와 승리’(4-6절)라는 군사적 주제의 도식을 명확하게 보여준다. 특히 3절은 이스라엘 백성(군대)이 이방 민족들에 맞서 거룩한 장식으로 치장하고 전쟁을 위해 자원하여 나선 장면을, 6절은 메시아 왕과 그의 백성을 위해 직접 전투에 나서신 하느님께서 이방 민족들을 심판하여 그들의 머리를 깨부수고 그 주검들로 온 들판을 가득 채우시는 극도로 폭력적인 장면을 묘사한다. 시편집 전반에 걸쳐 이스라엘 구원의 특수주의(particularism)와 전 인류의 구원을 지향하는 보편주의(universalism), 이 두 가지 관점의 구원론이 병존하고 있음은 주지의 사실이나, 특히 시편 110편은 이방 민족들을 상대로 한 하느님의 전투와 심판을 가장 잔혹하고 피비린내 나는 살육으로 묘사하는 구약성경 장면들(cf. 이사 34,1-6; 63,1-6; 에제 39장; 하바 3,12-14) 중의 하나로 손꼽힌다.
본 작업은 시편 110(109)편의 마소라 본문과 칠십인역 본문의 비교 작업으로서 다음과 같은 사실에서 출발한다: ‘두 본문 사이 뚜렷한 차이점들이 다른 구절들에서는 발견되지 않는 반면, 왜 유독 하느님께서 이방 민족들과 벌이는 성전과 관련된 언급들인 3절과 6절에만 집중되어 있는가?’ 하는 점이다. 물론 이 차이점들을 언어적, 문법적 차원만으로도 어느 정도 설명할 수는 있지만, 그것들이 본문 안에 가져오는 의미론적 변화들이 하나의 뚜렷한 주제상의 방향성을 띠고 있다는 사실은 그 차이점들을 단순히 번역 중 발생한 언어적 현상으로만 치부할 수는 없음을 시사한다.
칠십인역 시편은 이방 민족들에 맞서 자원한 메시아 왕의 군대가 전열을 갖춘 장면(3절MT)을 메시아 왕의 주권과 신적 탄생에 대한 언급으로 전환하면서, 하느님께서 이방인 적들을 전멸시켜버리는 구약성경의 구절들(ex. 판관 5-7장; 2역대 20장)과의 본문상의 연관성을 더 이상 고수하지 않는다. 또한 하느님께서 이방 민족들을 심판하여 그들의 머리를 깨부수고 그 주검들로 온 들판을 가득 채우시는 피비린내 나는 폭력적 장면(6절MT) 역시 더 이상 언급하지 않고, 마소라 본문이 묘사하는 종말론적 심판의 대상과 그 범위를 변경함으로써 잔혹하게 묘사된 장면들을 훨씬 ‘완화’된 형태로 재해석한다.
이방 민족들에 대한 하느님의 호전성과 폭력성이 칠십인역 시편에서 현저히 완화되어 표현된다는 사실은 시편의 번역자가 이방 민족들에게 특별한 관심을 갖고 있었고, 그들과 하느님, 또 그들과 메시아 왕(이스라엘을 대표) 사이의 관계를 좀 더 긍정적으로 묘사하려는 하나의 편집 의도, 말하자면 주해적, 신학적 의도를 갖고 있었음을 시사한다. 이러한 칠십인역 번역의 특수성은, 적어도 본문 차원에서 말하자면, 번역자 또는 그의 공동체가 이방 민족들에 대해 가졌던 보다 열린 자세, 즉 보편주의적 관점의 반영이라는 측면에서 이해할 수 있다. 사실 이방 민족들과 함께 살며 그들과 좀 더 유연한 관계를 유지해야 했던 디아스포라 공동체들 안에서, 이스라엘의 전통적 신학 사상들이 이방 민족들에 대한 개방과 포용의 태도(보편주의) 안에 자연스레 녹아들었음은 주지의 사실이기도 하다.

영어초록

The Masoretic Psalm 110, which is classified as royal psalm, clearly shows the scheme of military theme called ‘preparation of holy war against foreign peoples’(vv. 1-3) and ‘battle of God and victory’(vv. 4-6).
Specially, v. 3 depicts the people(army) of Israel who are adorned with holy ornament and volunteer to engage in the battle against the gentiles, and v. 6 describes an extremely violent scene where God, who goes into a battle in person for King Messiah and his people, judges foreign peoples and crushes their heads and fills the entire field with their bodies. It is a known fact that the two soteriologies as particularism of Israel’s salvation and universalism that reaches forward to the salvation of the whole human race are coexisting in the entire the Book of Psalms, but specially, Psalm 110 is considered as one of the scenes in the Old Testament that describe the battle and judgement of God against foreign peoples as most brutal and bloody slaughter(cf. Isa 34,1-6; 63,1-6; Ezek 39; Hab 3,12-14).
This study starts from the following fact as a comparative work between the Masoretic text and Septuagint text of Psalm 110(109): ‘why are distinct differences between the two texts only concentrated in v. 3 and v. 6 – references related to the holy war that God staged against the gentiles – whereas such differences are not found in other verses?’ Of course, these differences can be explained to some degree at linguistic and grammatical level, but the fact that semantic changes they bring in the text show a clear thematic orientation implies that such textual differences cannot be regarded just as a linguistic phenomenon that occurred during translation.
Septuagint Psalm no longer sticks to the textual link with the other passages of the Old Testament where God annihilates foreign enemies(cf. Judg 5-7; 2Chr 20) by changing a scene where the people(army) of King Messiah set the battle in array against the gentile enemies(v. 3MT) into proclamation of sovereignty and divine birth of King Messiah. Also, it does not mention any more about the violent bloody scene where God judges foreign peoples and crushes their heads and fills the entire field with their bodies(v. 6MT), and reinterprets the brutal scene in much more ‘moderated’ form by limiting the range of the object of apocalyptic judgement described in Masoretic text.
The fact that belligerence and violence of God against foreign peoples getting expressed in noticeably mitigated form in Septuagint Psalm implies that the translator of Psalm had special concern over foreign peoples and had a editorial intention, meaning interpretative or theological intention to depict a relationship between God and them and King Messiah(representing Israel) and them more positively. To speak at the text level, the distinct characteristics of Septuagint translation can be comprehended in an aspect of more opened attitude, meaning reflection of universalistic viewpoint, that the translator or his community had towards foreign people. It is also well known fact that traditional theological ideas of Israel are naturally melted into the attitude of openness and engagement toward foreign peoples(universalism) in Diaspora community who had to live with and maintain more flexible relationship with the gentiles.
