『속비구니전』에 등장하는 중국 비구니들의 활동- 1~3권을 중심으로 - (Chinese nuns’ activity appeared in Sub-Biographies of Buddhist Nuns - Focused on VolumeⅠ-Ⅲ -)

초록

본 논문은 『속비구니전』 6권 가운데 1-3권에 기록된 비구니들의 수행과 사회적 역할에 대해 작성한 것이다. 1-3권에 등장하는 시대는 양-명대까지 해당되며, 그 시기비구니의 수행과 주요 활동을 각 시대의 특징에 따라 발췌 분류하여 정리하였다. 소개된 내용의 특징을 시대별로 구분해서 살펴보면 대략 다음 두 가지로 나누어 볼 수 있다.
첫째, 비구니들의 신앙과 수행에 관련된 내용이다. 양의 총지 비구니를 최초로 소개하고 있는 권1의 내용은 크게 당대 이전과 당대로 나눌 수 있다. 당대 이전의 비구니들은 총지와 같이 선관(禪觀)이나 선혜(禪慧)를 닦는 수행을 했으며, 혹은 경전을 독송하거나 계행을 철저히 지켰다. 경전은 주로 『법화경』을 독송했는데, 당대에는 독송 외에 사경이나 법화 삼매 수행을 했다. 그리고 삼매 수행은 소신이나 사신(捨身)공양으로 이어지기도 했다. 권2의 송대 비구니들은 경전 독송 등의 수행보다는 참선 수행을 통해 깨달음을 얻은 비구니가 많이 소개되어 있다. 그들은 스승의 인정을 받고 상당법문을 할 기회도 주어졌으며, 당당하게 법을 이은 제자로 등록되어 있다. 권3에는 원대 8명과 명대 16명의 비구니를 기록하고 있다. 원대 비구니 대부분은 선지식을 참방하고 깨달음을 얻었으며, 비구니 선사의 자격으로서 상당법문이나 선문답을 통해 제자들을 교육하고 법을 전했다. 선 수행이 거의 사라진 명대의 비구니는 철저한 고행과 함께 개인적인 경전 독송 등으로 수행을 삼았다.
둘째, 수행과 더불어 대사회적인 활약이나 전법을 시대별로 정리하였다. 먼저 당시대 이전의 특징은 『법화경』 독송을 통해 얻은 신이적인 모습으로 주위를 감화 시켰다. 당 시대에는 경전을 통한 대중포교, 사찰불사, 구호사업, 제자교육, 사신보시, 선시 등 으로 득법제자 외에 일반 대중들의 교화와 이익을 위해 활발하게 활동했다. 송·원·명대 비구니들은 당대와는 달리 개인이 소규모로, 혹은 상황에 따라 대중적으로 활동하는 경우로 나뉜다. 송대의 경우, 수행력을 통한 깨달음으로 대중의 존경을 받았으며, 선사나 법사의 자격으로 법문을 하고 대중을 부처님의 세계로 이끌었다. 또는 대장경을 간행하여 대중에게 불교를 전하고자 했다. 전자에 속하는 비구니들은 대부분 명대의 비구니들로서 개인적으로 병든 이들의 치료에 힘을 쏟았으며, 식량이나 의복 등을 필요한 이들에게 나누어주었다. 그리고 경전의 내용을 주위에게 알려주거나 신앙을 통한 신이한 모습으로 어려움을 덜어 주기도 했다. 이상 살펴본 바와 같이 비구니들의 수행과 사회적인 활동은 각 시대에 따라 차이를 보인다. 그것은 그 시대 위정자들의 불교에 대한 입장과 정책에 따라 활발하게, 혹은 위축되어 소극적으로 진행되었기 때문이다.

영어초록

This paper deals with buddhist practices and social roles of nuns recorded in the volume Ⅰ-Ⅲ of six volumes of the Sub-Biographies of Buddhist Nuns. Three Volumes from the Yang Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty included with buddhist practices and main activities of that time were selected, divided and arranged according to the characteristic of each epoch. Characteristics of introduced contents could be divided into two parts as follows approximately.
First of all, there is a content related with believes and buddhist practices of nuns. The content of the first Volume introduced the Yang’s nun named Chongzi for the first time, divided before and after the Dang Dynasty. Nuns before the Dang Dynasty, like as the nun Chongzi, practiced contemplation and wisdom of Seon by meditation, or recited buddhist canons and practice nun’s rules.
At most, they chanted the Lotus Sutra, copied the scriptures and practiced Dharma-flower absorption. And practicing Concentration(Samādhi) succeeded to the offering her body and Self-immolation by burning. In the second Volume, nuns of the Song Dynasty were introduced more nuns enlightened by Seon meditation than female practitioners of chanting canons etc. They took an acknowledgement by a master and received an opportunity to expound doctrine before mass in a meditation hall and are registered as a pupil inherited in Dharma line.
In the third Volume, the book recorded 8 nuns of the Yuan Dynasty and 16 nuns of the Ming Dynasty. Most of nuns of the Yuan Dynasty met Seon masters and attained enlightenment, taught her pupils and transmitted the Dharma through Seon encounter dialogue and Dharma talk in a meditation hall about Seon.
Nuns of the Ming Dynasty which Seon Practice almost disappeared, practiced through penance and individually chanting canons etc.
Secondly, the contents about nuns’ active roles and buddhist mission in that society are organized according to each dynasty. First of all, the characteristic before the Dang Dynasty was to influence people with mystical figure obtained by chanting canons. But In the Dang Dynasty, they did active action in the area of massive mission through canons, construction of temple, relief work, education to pupils, donation of dead body, literature etc and were active to obtain pupils and teach buddhism and give benefits for people.
Nuns of the Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasty unlike the Dang Dynasty divided individual small activity and massive activity by a community. In case of the Song Dynasty, they received many honours by people because of enlightenment by the power of the buddhist practice, gave Dharma talks, led many people to the Buddha’s World as a Seon master and Dharma master. Or they tried to propagate buddhism through publishing canons.
The former nuns are almost belonging to the Ming Dynasty. Individually they aimed at treating patients, gave those who need foods and clothes and lessened their difficulties by the method which nuns informed them canonical meaning and showed mystical figure by belief.
As we have seen, practices and social roles of nuns show distinct difference according to each Dynasty. Because according as those who govern have a certain position and policy about Buddhism at that time, nuns worked on positive or negative lines.
