“미국 공놀이”와 쿠바니다드: 19세기후반 쿠바 민족주의의 형성에서 야구가 한 역할 (Pelota Americana and Cubanidad: Baseball’s Role in Shaping the Nationalism in the Colonial Cuba during the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century)

이 논문은 19세기 후반기 쿠바의 크리오요 사이에서 민족 정체성이 형성되는 과정에서 야구라는 스포츠가 한 역할을 밝히려는 시도이다. 19세기에 쿠바의 백인 토착 엘리트인 크리오요는 식민 본국인 에스파냐의 쿠바 통치에 반감을 품고 분리와 독립을 시도하기 시작했고, 이 시도는 “10년 전쟁” 등의 무력 항쟁으로 이어졌다. 한편, 1860년대 중엽에 미국에서 들어온 야구가 쿠바에서 인기 스포츠로 자리를 잡아나갔고 뿌리를 내렸다. 쿠바 민족주의의 성장과 야구의 대중화 사이에는 밀접한 연관성이 있었다. 민족주의의 성장에는 민족 정체성의 형성과 강화가 필수 요소이므로, 19세기 쿠바의 경우에 크리오요는 자기들이 에스파냐인이 아니라 쿠바인이라는 독자적 정체성을 가져야 했다. 에스파냐 본국의 쿠바 통치에 불만을 가진 쿠바의 크리오요 사이에서 “미국 공놀이”, 즉 야구는 단순한 오락이 아니었다. 그들에게 야구는 진보와 교양을 대표했고 시대에 뒤처진 에스파냐의 표상이자 “야만적”인 투우와 대비되는 스포츠였으므로 야구를 한다는 것은 에스파냐에 항거한다는 의미를 띠었다. 달리 말해서, 야구를 하고 즐기는 행위는 식민 통치에 대항해서 쿠바인 나름의 정체성을 만들어내는 과정의 일부이기도 했다. 이 사실을 깨달은 식민지 당국은 야구를 의심하고 탄압하기까지 했다. 이런 까닭에 쿠바 안팎의 야구인들 가운데에서 독립 투사가 많이 배출되었으며, 쿠바독립전쟁에 참여한 쿠바의 야구 선수도 적지 않았다. 이 과정에서 야구는 쿠바의 국민 정체성의 한 부분, 매우 중요한 일부가 되었다. 이러한 역사적 맥락에서 보면, 훗날 미국의 “전국민의 오락”인 야구가 쿠바에서도 “전국민의 오락”이 된 것이 이상한 일이 아니다. 요컨대, 야구가 쿠바 민족주의의 형성과 성장에 적잖은 역할을 했다는 사실은 민족주의와 스포츠의 밀접한 상관 관계를 입증해주는 역사적 사례라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This article aims to illuminate the role played by baseball in the process of nation building in the colonial Cuba during the second half of the nineteenth century. The nineteenth century saw that the animosity against the Spanish colonial rule was on the increase amongst the Cuban creoles, the native White elites who took the initiative in the economic and cultural development of the Isle of Cuba. They went further to make an endeavour to be independent from Spain. Such an endeavour led to the “Ten Years’ War”(1868-78). In the middle of 1860s, meanwhile, baseball was introduced to Cuba either by the American sailors from US naval ships at anchor in the harbours such as Havana and Matanzas or by those Cuban students who had studied in the higher educational institutions in the United States. Once introduced, it took firm root in Cuba and became a very popular sport, especially among the creoles. The popularization of baseball had a close relationship with the growth of nationalism in Cuba during the mid and late nineteenth century. As a rule, the shaping and strengthening of national identity is an essential prerequisite for the fully fledged nationalism. In the case of Cuba in the nineteenth century those creoles who pursued independence from Spain began to construct their own identity, which was distinguished from that of the Spaniards. For the Cuban creoles the “pelota americana”, i.e. the baseball was not a simple game of ball but a significant sport which was considered a sort of surrogate for bull fighting. They thought baseball as the cultured, progressive and noble sport and, at the same time, regarded the Spanish bull fighting as the wild violent and barbarian one. In other words, playing and enjoying baseball in the latter half of the nineteenth century in Cuba was tantamount to resisting the Spanish colonial rule and shaping cubanidad, the Cuban national identity. The Spanish authorities in Cuba were suspicious of baseball and sometimes issued the bans on playing it. On the other hand, many of the fighters for the Cuban national independence movement was siphoned from the baseball players in Cuba both at home and abroad. In such a context it is not strange that baseball, “the American national pastime,” became a Cuban national pastime in the twentieth century. The historical fact that baseball played a significant role in the formation and growth of the Cuban national identity is illustrative of the close relationship between nationalism and sport in the modern world.
