초록

본고는 지금까지 학계에 제대로 소개된 적이 없는 凝窩 李源祚(1792~ 1871)의 『耽羅錄』을 대상으로 하여 『탐라록』을 저술하게 된 배경에 대해 간단하게 검토하고, 여기에 수록된 내용을 토대로 그의 내면 의식을 파악해 보고자 한 것이다.
응와 이원조는 1792년(정조 16) 경북 성주에서 태어나 1809년(순조 9) 18세의 어린 나이로 문과에 급제한 다음, 1871년(고종 8) 세상을 떠날 때까지 관직에 종사하였던 19세기 영남지역을 대표하는 관료 가운데 한 사람이다. 그러나 권력의 중심에서 비껴 있던 출신 성분 때문에 내직보다는 주로 외직을 전전하였던 바, 1841년 1월 1일에는 가파도 인근 해상에 정박한 영국 배가 소란을 일으킨 일이 계기가 되어 제주 목사로 부임하게 되었다.
『탐라록』은 그가 강릉 부사로 재직하면서 제주 목사로 전직을 명령받은 1841년(헌종 6) 1월 9일부터 제주 목사에서 물러나 고향 성주 집에 도착한 1843년(헌종 8) 8월 27일까지 약 32개월 동안 보고 듣고 경험한 사실을 날짜별로 정리하여 기록한 일종의 일기체 형식의 기록으로 『凝窩全集』 제4권에 필사본으로 전한다. 응와는 환해풍파 속에서도 글쓰기를 삶의 중요한 한 영역으로 실천하며 날마다 겪은 일과 감상을 그날그날 창작한 시문과 함께 첨부하였는가 하면 관직을 수행하면서 겪은 근무 경험과 그 가운데 짓게 된 공문까지 총 망라하여 『탐라록』을 편찬하였다.
이렇게 편찬된 『탐라록』은 지금까지 소개된 여타 제주 관련 기록과 비교가 안 될 정도로 내용과 형식면에서 다채롭기 비할 데 없는 것이었다. 그는 제주의 이국적인 풍물과 미개한 풍속, 그리고 제주민의 삶의 현장을 서술하는데 지면을 아낌없이 할애하여 내면화된 관료로서의 소명 의식을 가감 없이 표출하였다. 다시 말해 『탐라록』은 새로운 풍물에 대한 호기심과 백성의 삶에 대한 남다른 관심이 그의 타고난 작가적 기질과 결부되어 만들어 낸 결과물에 다름 아니다.
이런 점에서 『탐라록』은 응와의 제주에서의 행적은 물론 그의 삶과 문학을 한층 폭넓게 이해할 수 있게 해 주는 또 다른 하나의 창구가 될 것이며, 아울러 최근 국내외의 관광 명소로 주목받고 있는 제주의 조선 후기 지방사 연구에 중요한 자료로 기여할 것이다.

영어초록

Through the 『Tamlarok(耽羅錄)』 of Eungwa(凝窩) Lee Won-jo(李源祚) (1792~1871), which has never been properly introduced to the academic community until now, this paper briefly examined the background of writing the 『Tamlarok』. And, based on the contents contained in 『Tamlarok』, this paper tried to figure out his inner consciousness.
Eungwa Lee Won-jo was one of the most representative bureaucrat of Youngnam region in the 19th century who was born in Seongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do in the 1792(King Jeongjo 16 years) and passed the civil service literary examination at the young age of 18 in the 1809(King Sunjo 9 years) and after served in public office until his death in the 1871(King Gojong 8 years). However, because of his origin which was displaced from the center of power, he mainly transferred to provincial government posts rather than central government posts. On January 1, 1841, the British ship anchored in the sea near Gapado, caused a turmoil, on this occasion, he proceeded to a Jeju Provincial governor.
『Tamlarok』 was a kind of diary-style record that organized and recorded the facts of seeing, listening, and experiencing for 32 months, from January 9, 1841(King Heonjong 6 years) when he was ordered to change his position as a Jeju provincial governor while serving as a Gangneung provincial governor, until August 27, 1843(King Heonjong 8 years) when he resigned from a Jeju provincial governor and arrived at his hometown, Seongju. 『Tamlarok』 was included in the fourth volume of 『Complete Works of Eungwa(凝窩全集)』 as a manuscript. Eungwa practiced writing as an important area of life, even in difficult official life, and attached the experiences and thoughts that he experienced each day along with the poems he created on that day. He compiled 『Tamlarok』, covering all the work experiences that he experienced while performing his public office and the official documents he created.
The 『Tamlarok』, compiled in this way, was so incomparably various in terms of content and form, so that it could not be compared with other Jeju-related records introduced so far. He honestly expressed his consciousness of vocation as an internalized bureaucrat by generously devoting the paper space to describing the exotic scenery and customs and the uncivilized customs of Jeju, and the scene of Jeju residents’ life. In other words, 『Tamlarok』 was the result of curiosity about new scenery and customs and extraordinary interest in the lives of the people in conjunction with his innate artistic temperament.
In this regard, 『Tamlarok』 will be another channel for a broader understanding of Eungwa’s activities in Jeju as well as his life and literature. In addition, it will also serve as an important source of research on the local history of Jeju in late Joseon Dynasty, which has recently attracted attention as a tourist attraction at domestic and foreign.
