화랑(畫廊)에 대한 재고찰 –1970년대를 중심으로- (Galleries Reconsidered – A Study Focusing on the 1970s)

초록

화랑은 미술사와 매우 긴밀한 관계에 있음에도 불구하고 단순하게 미술품을 매매하는 공간으로만 평가되면서 그 역할과 활동이 연구되지 못한 측면이 있다. 특히 1970년대에는 한국 현대미술사에서 매우 중요한 역할을 담당하였다. 1970년대 화랑에서 열린 전시를 통해 전위미술 그룹의 다양한 실험 미술 전개, 단색조 회화의 첫 발표, 한국 현대미술 기점 제시, 미술비평지를 비롯한 미술 잡지 창간, 이중섭과 박수근을 비롯한 근대 미술 작가 회고전과 화집 발간, 동양화단의 세대교체와 현대 실경산수 전개, 판화의 장르화 등 한국 현대미술의 중요한 사건들이 나타나게 된다.
본고에서는 1970년대 개관한 화랑 가운데 전시 활동을 통하여 당시 미술계 흐름과 깊은 관련을 보이며 뚜렷한 족적을 남긴 명동화랑, 현대화랑, 동산방화랑의 주요 전시 활동들을 고찰하였다. 1970년대 명동화랑은 전위미술 작가들의 발표기관으로 작용하였고, 동산방화랑은 30·40대 동양화 중견작가들을 집중적으로 조명하여 동양화단 세대교체를 성공적으로 견인하여 미술계의 신진작가 발굴에 앞장섰으며, 현대화랑은 박수근, 이중섭 등 근대 미술 작가 전시 개최와 화집 발간을 통해서는 미술사적 담론을 형성하여 작가가 미술계와 대중에게 재조명될 수 있는 계기를 마련하였다. 그리고 고미술품 중심의 미술시장에서 전시를 통해 동시대 미술품을 적극적으로 유통시켰으며, 『현대미술』, 『화랑』, 『미술춘추』 등의 잡지를 창간하여 대중에게 미술문화를 전파하였다. 이를 통해 1970년대 화랑이 미술관이 부족한 미술계 상황 속에서 미술관, 미술평론, 상업 공간 등의 다 기능을 수행하는 복합공간이었음을 확인 할 수 있었다.

영어초록

Despite the intimate link between galleries and art history, the former have in many ways beenregarded merely as spaces for buying and selling artworks, with little research having been conductedinto their roles and activity. Galleries played a particularly important role in Korean contemporary arthistory in the 1970s. Exhibitions held in galleries at this time gave rise to crucial events in Koreancontemporary art, including the development of diverse experimental art by avant-garde groups, thefirst exhibitions of monochrome painting, proposed starting points for Korean contemporary art, thepublishing of critical and other art magazines, retrospectives of works by modern artists such as LeeJung-seob and Park Soo-keun and publication of books of their paintings, the transition to a newgeneration of Oriental-style painters, the development of contemporary real-scenery landscape painting,and the establishment of prints as a genre.
This study is an examination of major exhibitions held by Myongdong Gallery, Gallery Hyundaiand Dong San Bang Gallery, three venues that opened in the 1970s and became intimatelyconnected to artistic trends in this period through their exhibitions and other activities. MyongdongGallery played a role in publicizing avant-garde artists in the 1970s. Dong San Bang Gallerysuccessfully achieved a change in generations by focusing on established artists in their 30s and 40s,and played a leading role in discovering new artists. Gallery Hyundai held exhibitions of works bymodern artists such as Park Soo-keun and Lee Jung-seob and published books of their paintings,forming art historical discourses and bringing renewed attention for these artists in the art world andamong the general public. Through their exhibitions, these galleries actively distributed contemporaryartworks in an art market previously dominated by antique works. They also helped spread artisticculture among the general public by publishing magazines such as Hyundai misul (“Contemporaryart”), Hwarang (“Gallery”) and Misul chunchu (“Art Year”). It is thus clear that galleries in SouthKorea in the 1970s functioned as multipurpose venues, playing roles of museums, critics andcommercial spaces at a time when the country lacked sufficient art museums.
