근대화론과 1970년대 문학사 서술 (A Study on the Modernization Theory and the Description of Literary History in the 1970s)

초록

본고는 문학사의 연속과 단절을 바라보는 관점을 1960년대 이후 제기된 근대화론의 문제와 연관하여 살펴보고자 했다. 이 시기 근대화에 대한 다양한 시각들은 단순히 이론적 측면에서 제안된 것이 아니라 당대의 정치사회적 실천방안으로 제시된 것으로 이해되며 그것이 학적 공간에 직접적인 영향을 끼친 것으로 파악된다고 본고는 전제하였다. 그것이 문학사 기술이라는 특정 연구영역에서 문학담론에 실질적인 영향관계를 보인다고 할 때 그 주요한 해석적 논점은 크게 세 가지로 나타난다. 첫째, 근대문학의 기점을 문학사의 내재적 발전이라는 측면에서 영정조 시기로 소급하는 것은 고전문학과 현대문학의 연속성을 어떤 방식으로 재기술할 수 있는가. 둘째, 근대문학의 담당층은 어떤 정치사회적 토대 위에 존재하며 그들은 근대문학의 특성과 가치를 어떤 방식으로 결정하는가. 셋째, 근대 민족어의식과 근대문학 양식의 정립에 대한 다양한 연구자들의 시각은 어떤 방식으로 문학사적 연속과 단절을 설명하며 그것이 1970년대 문학장에서 어떤 방식으로 전개되고 있는가.
본고에서는 이를 위해 1960년대 미국 근대화론 입안자들의 정책결정이 한국지식담론에서 재생산되는 양상을 살폈으며 그것이 사학계에서 제기된 내재적 발전론과 어떤 관계를 가지는가 하는 점을 우선적으로 고찰하였다. 이러한 담론 지형을 전제로 하여 먼저 조선후기 근대기점론의 직접적인 영향을 받은 고전문학에서의 문학사적 논점을 실학파 문학과 평민문학에 대한 가치평가를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 다음으로 김윤식, 김현이 함께 저술한 『한국문학사』(1973)에서 제시된 문학사 기술방법론이 가지는 문제점을 근대문학 기점 설정의 정당화 방식 및 한국문학사의 특수성 문제와 연관하여 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 『한국문학사』의 관점에 대한 비판으로, <문학과지성>과 <창작과비평> 양 문학진영에서 제기된 논점의 특성과 문제점을 논했다.
이러한 분석의 결과는 다음과 같다. 자본주의화에 대한 상이한 관점에서부터 근대문학의 기점에 대한 가치부여가 각기 달리 이루어지는 바, 고전문학 연구자들이 취하는 연속성의 관점은 근대어와 근대문학양식상에서의 단절을 쉽게 설명할 수 없는 난점을 드러내지만 근대문학 담당층의 역할에 대한 당대 근대화론으로부터의 직접적인 영향관계를 분명하게 보여준다. 현대문학 연구자들의 시각은 표면적으로 근대화론의 기본 전제를 받아들이면서도 그 연속성을 어떻게 재구할 것인가에 대해서는 상이한 관점들을 보여주며 그것이 『한국문학사』 서술 내부에서도 긴장관계로 나타날 뿐만 아니라 이에 대한 이후 비판의 관점에서도 나타난다. 자본주의에 대한 승인과 거부, 근대문학 담당층으로서의 시민계급의 부재에 대한 논점, 한국문학의 주변성과 특수성에 대한 해석적 차이 등이 그 결과로 나타나며, 이는 <문학과지성>과 <창작과비평> 양 진영이 취하는 문학론적 시각의 차이를 분명하게 드러내는 것이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study set out to examine the perspective to see the continuance and discontinuance of literary history in connection with the issues of modernization theory raised in the 1960s and years following. The diverse perspectives about modernization are understood to have been proposed as the political and social practice plans of the times rather than simple theoretical ones and exerted direct influences on the academic space. Given that they represent the practical influential relations of literary discourse in the certain research area of literary history description, there are three major interpretive points: first, how can it re-describe the continuity of classical and contemporary literature to trace the starting point of modern literature to the reigns of Kings Yeongjo and Jeongjo retroactively in terms of intrinsic development of literary history? Secondly, on what political and social foundations is the class responsible for modern literature? How do they determine the characteristics and values of modern literature? Finally, how the views of various researchers on the establishment of modern national language consciousness and modern literature styles explain the continuance and discontinuance of literary history? How did they develop in the field of literature in the 1970s? The present study first examined the patterns of policy decisions by the planners of American modernization theory in the 1960s being reproduced in the Korean knowledge discourse and their relations with the intrinsic development theory raised by the historical circles. On the premise of that discourse topography, the investigator delved into the points of literary history in classical literature directly influenced by the theory of modern starting point in the latter half of Joseon with a focus on the value assessment of positive school literature and commoners' literature. It then moved onto the problems of descriptive method theory for literary history proposed by Kim Yun-shik and Kim Hyeon in their book History of Korean Literature(1973) in connection with the uniqueness issues of modern starting point theory and Korean literary history. Finally, it discussed the features and problems of points raised by both the wings of literature, Literature and Intelligence and Creation and Criticism, to criticize the perspectives of History of Korean Literature.
The analysis results were as follows: as different perspectives of capitalization have started to grant values to the starting point of modern literature, the perspective of continuity shared by the researchers of classical literature has its disadvantage of not being able to explain discontinuity in modern language and modern literary styles easily but does show clearly the direct influences of modernization theory of the times on the roles of the class responsible for modernization. The researchers of contemporary literature accept the basic premise of modernization theory on the surface but show different perspectives as to how to restore the continuity. Not only does it appear as a strained relation in the description of History of Korean Literature, but it is also found in the critical perspectives about them. The resulting outcomes include approval and rejection of capitalism, point about the absence of the bourgeoisie as the class responsible for modern literature, and interpretive differences in the marginality and uniqueness of Korean literature. They clearly display differences in the views of literary theories between Literature and Intelligence and Creation and Criticism.
