1950~70년대 <대한뉴스> 타이포그래피의 성격 (A Study on the Characteristics in Typography of Daehan News in 1950~1970s)

초록

이 논문은 1950~70년대 극장에서 상영되었던 <대한뉴스>의 각 정권 시기별 ‘정치 및 사회’, ‘기술환경’, ‘타이포그래피’의 상관관계를 분석한다. <대한뉴스>는 20세기 국가 홍보를 목적으로 공보실과국립영화제작소에서 만든 뉴스영화이자 대한민국 초기 영상매체이다. 당시 <대한뉴스>에 등장하는글자를 ‘자막’이라 불렀는데, 이 논문에서는 자막 연출과 운용을 통칭하여 ‘타이포그래피’라고 표현한다. 타이포그래피는 사회, 정치, 문화, 기술적인 측면과 긴밀하게 영향을 주고받는다. 따라서 새롭게등장하는 매체에서 다뤄지는 글자는 동시대를 투영하며 타이포그래피의 개념을 확장해나간다. 이 논문에서는 슬라이드에 흰 물감으로 글자를 써서 자막을 제작했던 1950~70년대 <대한뉴스> 흑백 방영분으로 연구 범위를 한정하여 한국정책방송원이 운영하는 온라인 아카이브에서 <대한뉴스> 자막화면을 수집하고 사회 및 기술 환경을 바탕으로 표현 경향을 알아보았다. <대한뉴스>는 다의적으로해석될 수 있는 영상으로부터 정부의 메시지를 명확하게 규정하여 자막으로 제공했다. <대한뉴스>는시각적으로 강한 인상을 주는 타이포그래피로써 정부의 메시지를 대중에게 명확히 각인시켰다. 1950 년대까지는 화면 하단에 작은 크기의 자막을 제공했으나 1960년대부터는 굵은 획의 글자를 화면 중앙에 배치했다. 생활 선도의 메시지를 구호로써 직접 전달하는 ‘표어’ 역시 웅장한 음악과 함께 별도의화면으로 제공했다. 또한, 국가 지도자의 손글씨체는 권력을 상징하는 글자체로 인식되는 점으로 미루어볼 때, 자막 타이포그래피 역시 해당 매체와 같은 분위기를 가진다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 <대한뉴스> 타이포그래피는 당시 사회, 기술 환경을 반영한 형태로 다양한 연출과 함께 정부의 메시지를 더욱 증폭시키는 프로파간다 성격을 띤다.

영어초록

This research analyzes the correlation between ‘political and social background’, ‘technical environment’, ‘typography’ of each regime period of Daehan News was screened in theaters in the 1950s to 1970s. Daehan News is a news film made by the Office of Public Information and the National Film production center to promote the nation in the 20th century and is an early Korean video medium. At that time, all the characters in Daehan News were called ‘captions.’ In this research, ‘typography’ means the production and expression of captions. Typography influences closely with social, political, cultural, and technological aspects. Thus, the characters addressed in the emerging media project the contemporary technology environment and expand the concept of typography. The research object is Daehan News in the 1950s to the ’70s, which produced captions by writing letters in white paint on slides. After collecting screens of Daehan News from the online archives of the Public Policy Broadcasting Service, and analyzed the trend of typography based on the social and technological environment. Daehan News captions defined and provided the government’s message from a diversely interpretable video. Daehan News used visually impressive typography that imprinted the government’s messages to the public. In the 1950s, Daehan News provided small captions at the bottom of the screen, while since 1960, bold stroke letters were placed in the center of the screen. The slogan, which directly conveys the message of life-leading, also provided a separate screen with grand music. Also, given that the handwriting of a national leader is considered a symbol of power, caption typography has the same mood as the corresponding media. Therefore, the typography of Daehan News reflects the social and technological environment of the time, has the characteristics of Propaganda, and amplifies the government’s message with various factors.
