yze the growing influence of the Hispanics on U.S. politics. Specifically, it examines the presidential election of 2008 and 2012. The main observations can be summed up as follows.
Hispanic birth rate is relatively high, and therefore the Hispanic population has formed the largest minority ethnic population. As such, growth rate of the eligible voters and voters of the Hispanics are also fast, compared to the race/ethnicity of the others. But it is much lower than the rate of population growth. The reason is that the average age of the Hispanics is young and many of them are still illegal immigrants.
The most important factors affecting increased political influence of the Hispanics, the increase in preference together with the eligible voters and voters, are closely related to their living patterns and party. Hispanics are concentrated in specific regimes, such as the states of Florida, New Mexico, Colorado, and Nevada important swing states in the U.S. presidential election. Therefore, they play an important role to decide the outcome of the presidential election that adopts the “winner-take-all” system. Hispanics give a preponderance of their votes to Democrats at both the state and national level.
Increased political influence of the Hispanic community has affected the change in the U.S. political map, strengthening of spanish influence, and reform of U.S. immigration laws. With the rapid increase in the Hispanic population, North Carolina and Virginia both of which were once strong Republican states have recently been transformed into swing states in which both the Democrats and Republicans fiercely compete. It is expected that the whole south, specifically Georgia, will undergoes profound changes in its state politics. Generational and regional gaps exist in Hispanics' use of their language, Spanish. Nevertheless, Hispanics attach more importance to the use of spanish than learning English. The Republicans and Democrats engage in election campaigns in which they employ spanish to appeal to the Hispanic community. As to the reform of immigration laws, the Democrats have supported it, which the Republicans have opposed. As they have suffered successive defeats in the presidential elections, however, the Republicans begin to change their position on the hot issue. As a result, the U.S. Senate passed the comprehensive immigration law, and the House of the Representative is discussing it.
Finally, we cannot think of the future of U.S. politics without any consideration of the influence of Hispanics. The Hispanic population will certainly further increase, and the Hispanic community will spread throughout the United States. This means the increase in Hispanics' influence in U.S. elections, which would offer good opportunity to the Democrats, which causing a political crisis. The Republicans must take proper steps to appeal to the Hispanic electorate.
