신의 형상으로서의 자아초월성에 대한 니버와 판넨베르크의 이해 (The Views of Niebuhr and Pannenberg on Self-Transcendence as the Image of God)

초록

오늘날 한국에서 인명을 경시하는 사상은 여러 가지 비극적인 결과를 낳고있다: 살인, 자살, 비인격적 대우, 인간의 수단화, 인간관계의 표피화. 이런현상은 인간의 정체성에 대한 혼란이나 그의 가치에 대한 왜곡과 허무감에근거한다. 현대에 와서, 기술문명이 발전하고 기능적 인간론이 득세하면서,그 현상은 더 복잡하게 심화하고 있다. 이 혼란과 왜곡에 대한 기독교적 응답은 인간이 하나님의 형상으로 창조되었다는 창세기의 선언이다. 최종진도말하기를, “올바른 자아개념은 성서에서 찾을 수밖에 없는데 그 중에 가장큰 내용이 바로 인간 창조의 독특성과 하나님 형상으로 창조 받은 인간의실존의 이해이다.”니버와 판넨베르크가 제기하는 신의 형상은, 인간이 우연히 존재한다고하면서 약육강식하는 동물처럼 사는 것을 정당화하거나 사람도 진화의 법칙에 따라 생존하는 것뿐이라는 결정론적 주장을 초월하여, 인간이 추구해야할 목표요 운명이기 때문에 신자에게 구체적인 목표의식을 요구하는 것이다. 이런 면이 사람을 동물과 구별하는 요소이므로, 그들의 그 형상론은 인간의 신적인 기원과 그에 수반하는 인간의 존엄성과 특이성을 고취하고 있는 것이다. 이 주장은 또한 사람의 도덕성, 인권, 공동체적 성격, 책임적 자유의 행사, 환경의 중요성에 관한 논의에 시사하는 바가 큰 것이다. 왜곡된 자아상의 굴레 속에서 자신과 타인을 비인격적으로 대하며 불행한 삶을 사는 이들에게 필요한 복음이 있다면, 그것은 인간이 신의 형상으로 창조된 고귀한 존재라는 것과 사람이 자의식을 통해 신과 진리를 추구하며 자신의 운명을 성취할 수 있다는 사실이다. 이런 의미에서 니버와 판넨베르크가 그 형상을 자아초월성이란 용어로 해설한 것은 신학적으로 정당하며 경험적으로 긍정할 수 있는 것이다.

영어초록

This study attempts to explicate how Niebuhr and Pannenberg see human self-transcendence as the conspicuous element of Imago Dei. Anatomizing their views, it examines if they present a Biblically-based, empirically- appropriate one, and how they agree or disagree with each other on the issue. It also explains and criticize their views on the property of self- transcendence, the relation of religion with self-consciousness, and the transcendence as a way to the future and truth, and finally the nature of their claims.
This dissertation focuses on their views of the image of God in terms of human exocentricity. In order to achieve this end, this writer research intensively into Niebuhr’s The Nature and Destiny of Man(2 volumes), Pannenberg’s Systematic Theology(3 volumes) and Anthropology in Theological Perspective, and their other works. Sometimes it juxtaposes their views to elaborate the differences between them, and other times it fuses the views into one to betray their agreements. This synthesizing effort is carried out in the power of self-transcendence as they describe it.
First of all, this study deals with how the two theologians conceive the concept of self-consciousness as the particularity of humanity. They contend that self-transcendence is a power to objectify human himself, and that the faculty is also called ‘openness to the world,’ or ‘exocentricity.’ Niebuhr and Pannenberg relate the concept to the themes of God, religion, truth, and future. According to them, humans can go beyond themselves, activating the transcendence, to God and truth. Human self-consciousness makes him stand outside of nature, life, himself, his reason, and the world. Then the faculty leads humans inevitably to search for God, truth, eternity, and salvation.
Their view of self-transcendence is wholistic in that they refuse to localize the image of God as human soul or its features like reason and freedom. In so doing, they make contributions to the discussion of the divine image in terms of the universal idea of self-transcendence, and to the relevancy of theology for human identity and destiny. However, they do not give enough attention to the theme of God’s transcendence as the root of human self-consciousness, and of the self-consciousness of animals as the object of comparison with human beings.
