초록

이 연구는 장용학의 『원형의 전설』에 나타난 인간 주체의 분열 양상을 한국전쟁 및 냉전 체제와 관련시켜 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 한국전쟁은 남북한에서 각기 강력한 반공․반미 이데올로기를 작동시키는 동인이 되었고, ‘자유’와 ‘평등’은 국가 권력을 유지하고 국민을 동질적인 주체로 통합하기 위해 정치적으로 재맥락화되어 자본주의 및 공산주의를 뒷받침하는 이분법적 개념으로 분절되었다. 이러한 한반도의 현실을 비판적으로 담아낸 『원형의 전설』은 한국전쟁을 내전이 아니라 세계적 냉전의 산물로 파악하고, 전후 한반도를 지배한 냉전 이데올로기의 허상을 들추어 당대의 국민이 경험해야 했던 주체의 분열 양상을 포착해낸 작품이다.
중심인물 ‘이장’이 친부를 찾고 자기 존재의 의미와 역사를 탐색하는 과정은 인간을 규정하고 억압하는 한반도의 대타자를 확인하는 과정으로 이해할 수 있다. ‘이장’은 끝내 사회의 집단적 정체성에 종속된 주체이기를 거부하고 체제 밖을 지향하는 이방인으로 남게 된다. 이러한 서사는 주체가 기존 질서의 기원과 바탕에 물음을 던지는 히스테리 담론 형식을 취한다. 국민을 동질화하는 지배 담론에 동화되지 못했던 자들의 영역, 즉 냉전 체제의 잉여 지대를 형상화하여 냉전기 한국 사회의 균열을 보여주고자 한 것이다. ‘이장’은 자신의 본래적 욕망을 추구하는 방향으로 나아가며, 인간을 억압하는 타자의 언술로부터 해방될 수 있는 “4차원”의 세계를 구상한다. 그것은 인간을 인간으로 규정하는 “인간적”이라는 개념을 폐기하고, 이분법과 같은 상징적 질서로써 왜곡되지 않은 본래의 “인간”을 지향하는 세계다.
인간의 자유에 대한 치열한 문제의식을 일깨우는 『원형의 전설』의 서사에는 일체의 강권과 억압에 저항하는 아나키즘적 정신이 담겨 있다. 『원형의 전설』은 합리라는 명분하에 강요되어 온 지배 담론과 제도의 이면을 포착하고, 인간 주체의 자율성에 대한 논의와 각성을 필요로 했던 냉전기의 문제의식을 문학적으로 승화한 작품이라는 것이 본고의 결론이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the split aspects of human subject in Jang Yong-hak's Legend of the Circularity in connection with the Korean War and Cold War system. The Korean War became a factor in the operation of a strong anti-communist and anti-American ideology in the south and north Korea, respectively. Freedom and equality were politically recontextualized to maintain state power and integrate the people into homogeneous subject, and were segmented into dichotomous concepts supporting capitalism and communism. Legend of the Circularity, which critically captures the reality of the Korean Peninsula, identifies the Korean War as a product of the global Cold War, not a civil war, and it is a work that captures the split of the subject that the people of the time had to experience by revealing the illusion of the Cold War ideology that dominated the Korean Peninsula after the war.
The process of the central character, ‘Lee Jang’ finding his father and exploring the meaning and history of his existence can be understood as a process of identifying the big other on the Korean Peninsula that defines and suppresses humans. ‘Lee Jang’ eventually refuses to be a subordinate subject to the collective identity of society and remains a stranger aiming outside the system. These narratives take the form of hysterical discourse in which the subject asks questions about the origins and basis of the existing order. It was intended to show the cracks in Korean society in the Cold War era by shaping the realm of those who could not be assimilated into the dominant discourse that homogenizes the people, that is, the surplus zone of the Cold War system. ‘Lee Jang’ moves in the direction of pursuing his original desire and conceives a world of “the fourth dimensions” that can be liberated from the words of the other that suppress humans. It is a world that abolishes the concept of “humane” defining humans as humans and aims for the original “human” that is not distorted by symbolic order such as dichotomy.
The narrative of Legend of the Circularity, which awakens the fierce awareness of human freedom, contains an anarchistic spirit that resists all power and oppression. This paper concludes that Legend of the Circularity captures the backside of the ruling discourse and institution that has been forced under the pretext of rationality and sublimates the critical mind in the Cold War period demanding discussion and awakening of the autonomy of human subjects in literature.
