초록

The aim of this study is to explain which life is more reasonable and desirable through comparing the two heroines’ sexual consciousness. Thomas Hardy is a keen and sharp critic of his contemporary’s anachronistic and unequal sex discrimination. Hardy tries to change the conception of Victorian society’s exclusive sense of values into more adequate and universal ones through this work. Theodore Dreiser, who develops naturalism in American literature, is a writer who is concerned about the perishing morality and ethics. Dreiser shows us that man’s reasoning and free will can not be displayed in a mechanical and material civilization. Although Tess is a woman who is just a helpless victim by coercive violence, Tess herself thinks she is a pure woman. And she does not love Alec and her virginity is lost by abrupt rape. And Angel, Tess’s lover, comes to understand her truth and finally accepts her request to marry her sister Liza-Lu. In conclusion, Hardy and Dreiser indicate that there are many contemporary’s social prejudices, out-of –date conventions and custom and excessive avarice and mammonism to root out in the modern society through comparison of two heroines’ sexual awareness.
