濟州 山川壇 곰솔림의 가치와 생육환경 개선방안 (The Value of Japanese Black Pine Grove at Sancheondan, Jeju and Some Suggestions Improving Its Growing Environment)

초록

산천숭배를 통해 오랜 시간 복합성과 체계성을 띤 산천단 곰솔림은 장소성 측면이나 타 곰솔 천연기념물과 비교해 볼 때 매우 독특한 경관자원이자 신원을 둘러싸고 있는 성림으로서의 가치가 인정된다. 산천단 곰솔은 수령 500～600년으로 추정되며, 국내 곰솔 중 가장 오래된 노거수로 제주의 풍토와 제의문화성을 그대로 간직한 유산경관이다. 따라서 생물학적 가치는 물론 문화경관적 의미와 가치가 높은 바, 이는 산천단의 배후숲인 곰솔림을 보존하고 이용함에 있어 성림적인 가치를 고려한 균형적 사고가 필요함을 의미한다.
산천단 보호구역 내에는 천연기념물 곰솔 이외에 총 17종의 목본식물이 생장하고 있으며, 이 중에는 곰솔과 수광량 경쟁 등 경합이 예상되는 팽나무 등은 선별적으로 제거하여 수광량 확보는 물론 토양내 뿌리 경합을 배제한 곰솔 생육환경을 조성하는 한편, 소산오름에 대한 배향성을 강화할 수 있다. 그리고 장식성 및 경관성 향상을 목적으로 식재된 산철쭉이나 동백나무의 이식과 손상목과 이병목에 대한 벌채 조치가 요구된다. 또한 소산오름은 물론 주변 지역에 광범위하게 확산되어 있는 삼나무나 편백 등은 점진적으로 벌채한 뒤 향토 수종으로 전환해야 할 것과 접근 우회도로에서의 차량 진입을 억제하는 한편, 지속적인 이용자 답압을 수용하기 위해 현재 아스팔트나 시멘트로 포장된 공간은 연질 포장재로 개선할 것을 제안한다. 더불어 곰솔은 낙뢰에 따른 손상에 허점이 노출되는 수목임을 고려한 보호시설이 요구된다. 그리고 주기적인 약제 살포와 토양 관주로 재선충병에 대한 예방에 주력하고, 정기적이고 체계적이며 과학적인 모니터링 체제 구축을 통해 수간 기울음과 피해지 등의 변화에도 예의 주시해야 할 것이다. 또한 여러 다른 이유로 생긴 수관층의 숲틈이 만들어진 곳의 하단이나 충분한 면적이 확보된 부분에 곰솔 유목을 보식하여 후계목으로 육성하는 것도 시급한 과제로 보인다.

영어초록

The Japanese black pine grove around the representation of Sancheondan in Jeju, has developed complex and systematic features through nature worship, and is very unique compared to other Japanese black pine natural treasures. it is valuable as a sacred grove surrounding the shrine garden. The Japanese black pine around the Sancheondan of Jeju with an estimated age of 500～600 years are the oldest great trees in Korea and have not only biological value, but also cultural and landscape values, having the characteristics of the natural and religious features of Jeju. It means that a balanced view is necessary in preserving and using the Japanese black pine grove which functions as the backyard of the Sancheondan of Jeju, considering its value as a sacred grove.
There are total 17 species of woody plants in the Sancheondan conservation area in Jeju. By removing some of the hackberry trees which compete with the Japanese black pine trees for sunlight, a larger amount of sunlight can be guaranteed to reach the Japanese black pine trees and their growth can be enhanced to exclude competition from the roots of other trees so that the Japanese black pine trees can have a directional feature toward Sosan Orem. Cutting the Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense and Camellia japonica that were planted for decoration and landscape is required, as is cutting damaged and infected trees. Additionally, the Cryptomeria japonica or Chamaecyparis obtusa that are widespread around the Soran Orem and other area should be removed and gradually replaced with native trees. We also suggest that car entry into the access detour road be repressed and the asphalt or cement paved spaces be replaced with soft paving materials to relieve the pressure produced by the pedestrians' walking. Moreover, considering that Japanese black pine trees are susceptible to damage by lightning, protective facilities should be installed.
Periodic pesticide spraying, protection from Bursaphelenchus xylophilus disease through the crowns from the soil, and careful monitoring of tree tilting and change in the affected area by establishing regular, systematic and scientific monitoring system should be carried out. It seems urgent that planting young Japanese black pine trees as the next-generation trees beneath gap-phase between crown layers formed by various reasons or in the area where there is sufficient space should also be achieved.
