고조선 건국 신화의 곰 화소와 민족기원론 (The Bear Motif in the Founding Myth of Gojoseon and the Theory of National Origin)

초록

근대 일본 학자들은 곰 화소를 주요 근거로 하여 고조선 건국 신화의 역사성을 부정하고 허구성을 강조하였다. 반면, 한국 학자들은 일본인들의 그러한 논조를 비판하고 고조선 건국 신화의 사실성을 모색하고자, 곰의 상징성 및 곰 이야기의 역사성을 깊이 고찰하였다. 그 과정에서 곰은 고조선 시대의 부족을 상징한다는 토템 설이 제시되었다. 나아가 곰을 숭상하며 토템으로 여기는 경향은 시베리아 북방 지역에서 성행하였으므로, 그 지역에서 신석기시대의 주민이 옮겨오거나 그 문화의 영향으로 파악하는 민족기원론이 함께 논의되었다. 고조선 건국 신화 속의 곰을 토테미즘의 관점에서 접근하는 연구는 일본인들의 고조선 건국 신화 부정론을 극복하고 역사성을 모색했다는 점에서 의의가 크다.
그러나 고조선 건국 신화의 곰을 토템으로 파악하고 곰 숭배 사상의 원류가 북방 문화라는 시각이 완벽한 해석이라 하기는 어렵다. 고조선 건국 신화를 비롯한 고대 건국 신화의 전반적인 맥락은 천신과 지신의 만남에 의한 건국 시조의 탄생이라는 구조이다. 그리고 다른 유형의 단군신화에 비교해 볼 때 곰에 해당하는 존재 역시 신격에 해당한다. 그러므로 『삼국유사』에 수록된 고조선 건국 신화의 곰 역시 지상의 신을 상징화한 존재로 보아야 하겠다.

영어초록

The bear motif of the founding myth of Gojoseon(古朝鮮) was the main argument for modern Japanese scholars to deny the historicality of the myth and emphasize its fictionality. On the other hand, in order to criticize the Japanese's arguement and to reveal that this myth reflects the facts, Korean scholars have examined the symbolism and historicity of the bear and its story. In the process, a totem theory was suggested that the bear symbolizes the tribe of the Gojoseon period. Because the trend of venerating and considering the bear as a totem was prevalent in northern Siberia, so the theory of national origin was also discussed that residents moved from Siberia to Gojoseon during the Neolithic period or that culture affected Gojoseon. The study of approaching bear in the founding myth of Gojoseon from the perspective of totemism is of great significance in that it overcame the denial of the founding myth of Gojoseon by the Japanese scholars and gave historicity.
However, it is difficult to say that it is a perfect interpretation to identify bears in this myth as totems and that the idea of bear worship originated from northern culture. The overall structure of the ancient founding myth, including the founding myth of Gojoseon, is the birth of the founding founder by the meeting of the heavenly god and the earth god. Moreover, compared to other types of Gojoseon founding myths, the beings corresponding to the bear is the Dansusin(檀樹神) or white tiger, which can be called forest spirits or mountain gods. Therefore, the bear of the myth of the founding of Gojoseon recorded in Samgukyusa(三國遺事) should also be regarded as a symbol of the God on Earth.
