한국 <곰나루>설화와 오키나와 <곰 아내(熊女房)> 설화의 비교연구 (A Comparative Study on the Korean Tale “Gomnaru” and the Okinawa Tale “Bear Wife”)

초록

이 논문은 한국의 <곰나루>설화와 일본 오키나와 지역의 <곰 아내>설화를 비교 연구한 것이다. 논의를 통해 두 지역 설화의 독자적 특징과 함께 설화전승집단의 세계인식을 살펴볼 수 있었다. <곰나루>설화는 인수교혼의 신화소를 바탕으로 전설과 민담으로의 이행을 보여준다. 동북아 곰 신화에서 보이는 암곰과 이상탄생아의 신성은 상대적으로 약해지고 보다 인간적으로 변화된 모습이다. 이에 따른 서사의 변주도 눈에 띄는데 그것이 <곰나루>설화의 독자성으로 연결된다. 전설형의 경우 자멸형태로 나타나는 암곰의 죽음과 암곰에 의해 살해당하는 이상탄생아의 죽음이 대표적이다. 민담형의 경우 이상탄생아의 성공담 및 남자의 후일담 삽화에서 독자성을 확인할 수 있다. 이에 비해 <곰 아내> 설화는 민담으로서의 모습이 보다 뚜렷하다. 암곰의 경우 신성과 수성은 사라지고 순종적이고 운명수용적인 여성의 모습으로 나타난다. 이로써 인수교혼의 신화는 곰 여인과 인간의 비련을 그린 환상담의 형태가 된다. 이야기 배경으로서의 무인도 공간, 암곰의 죽음 및 무인도 재방문 삽화를 통한 문예적 서사, 이상탄생아와 암곰의 인간화 과정은 모두 <곰 아내>설화의 독자적 변주 형태로 이해할 수 있다. <곰나루>설화와 <곰 아내>설화의 독자성은 모두 설화전승집단의 문명화된 곰 인식과 인간중심적 세계인식이 반영된 결과라 할 수 있다. 그러나 <곰나루>설화의 경우 그것이 인간과 자연의 통합을 거부, 부정하는 방식으로 표출되고 있는 반면, <곰 아내>설화에서는 자연을 인간의 질서로 변형, 포섭하는 형태로 나타나고 있다는 점에서 차이를 보인다.

영어초록

This study comparatively analyzes the Korean tale “Gomnaru” and the Okinawan tale “Bear Wife”. Accordingly, this study explores the independent characteristics of these regional tales and examines the worldview of the communities that passed these stories down. “Gomnaru” undergoes a shift to legends and folktales based on the mytheme of interspecies marriage. In Northeast Asian bear mythology, the sacredness of the she-bear and her offspring undergoes relative diminishment as they take on a more humanized form. This is reflected in changes in the narrative, leading to the uniqueness of the “Gomnaru” tale. In the case of the legendary form, the death of the she-bear in the form of self-destruction and her killing of he offspring are representative themes. The independence of the folktale form presents itself in the success stories of the offspring and subsequent narratives focused on the male characters. By contrast, “Bear Wife” is more distinctively a folktale. The she-bear loses her sacred and bestial attributes, instead appearing as a submissive female figure who accepts her fate. Thus, the myth about interspecies marriage becomes a fantastical tale depicting the tragic love between a bear woman and a human. Elements such as the uninhabited island setting, depictions of the she-bear’s death, and the literary narrative process of humanizing the offspring and the bear through illustrations of the return visit to the uninhabited island can be understood as independent modifications within the “Bear Wife” tale. The independence of “Gomnaru” and “Bear Wife” can be considered the reflections of the storytelling communities’ civilized perception of bears and a human-centric worldview. However, while the former expresses this through the rejection and denial of the integration of humans and nature, the latter differs by presenting a transformation and assimilation of nature into the human order.
