일본 문학상 <서점대상(本屋大償)> - 성공과 한계, 그리고 서점에서 책을 파는 즐거움 - (Japanese Literary Award - Success, limitations, and the joy of selling books at bookstores)

초록

2004년 전국 책방의 서점원들이 모여 만든 <서점대상>은 짧은 기간에도 불구하고 현재 일본에서 가장 영향력 있는 문학상으로 자리매김했다. 본고에서는 <서점대상>의 성공사례와 특징을 살펴봄으로써, 문학상은 범람하지만 정작 문학이 설 자리를 잃어 가는 이 시대, 문학상의 의미와 나아갈 길에 대해 재고해 보고자 하였다. 한국의 경우, 문학상과 관련해 자주 언급되는 것은 수상작 선정을 둘러싼 공정성 문제이다. 하지만 전문 위원회의 심사가 아닌 오로지 서점원들의 자발적인 투표와 봉사로 운영되는 이 문학상에 공정성을 제기하는 목소리는 없다. 한편, 다른 많은 문학상들이 문학적 가치와 작품성이 중요하다고 말할 때, <서점대상>은 책의 판매라는 상업적 목표를 천명했다. 본고에서는 출판사와 배본사, 서점의 공조를 이끌어내는 <서점대상> 실행위원회의 전략과, 출판사의 치열한 판촉 활동을 통해 <서점대상>의 성공 요인을 살펴보았다. 또한 본고에서는 역대 수상작 분석을 통해 <서점대상>의 취향과 특징을 고찰해 보았다. 그 결과 <서점대상>이 대중 문학상으로 최고 권위를 인정받고 있는 나오키상에 비해 여성작가 선호도가 매우 높은 것을 확인하였다. 또 <서점대상>과 중복도가 높은 키노베스(キノベス)와 요시카와에지문학신인상(吉川英治文学新人賞)에 대해 알아보고 이 두 상과의 영향관계를 점검해 보았다. 아울러 최근 4년 동안의 선정작들이 모두 가정과 사회에서 학대받고 방기되는 아이들, 나약하고 상처받은 사람들끼리의 연대와 치유를 다루고 있음을 고찰하였다. 끝으로 <서점대상>의 본질은 기존 문학상과 다른 반엄숙주의와 탈권위, 발랄함에 있으며, 독서계 최전선에서 일하는 서점원들이 <서점대상>이라는 이벤트를 통해 독서의 즐거움을 독자와 공유하는 것에 이 상의 진정한 의미가 있음을 피력하였다.

영어초록

The <Booksellers' Award>, created by bookseller's clerks from all over the country in 2004, has established itself as the most influential literary award in Japan despite the short period of time. In this paper, the success story and characteristics of the <Booksellers' Award> were examined with a view to reconsidering the meaning of the literary awards and the way forward in this era when literary awards overflow but literature loses its footing. In the case of South Korea, what is often mentioned in relation to literary awards is the issue of fairness surrounding the selection of winning works. However, there is no voice to raise the issue of fairness of this literary award, which is operated solely by the voluntary participation and service of bookseller's clerks, not by screening by an expert committee. Meanwhile, while many other literary awards said that literary value and quality of work were important, <Booksellers' Award> declared its commercial goal of selling books. In this paper, the success factors of the <Booksellers' Award> were examined through the strategy of the <Booksellers' Award> executive committee that leads to collaboration between publishers, distributors, and booksellers, and the publisher's intense promotional activities. In addition, this paper considered the taste and characteristics of the <Booksellers' Award> through analysis of past award-winning works. As a result, it was identified that the <Booksellers' Award> had a remarkably higher preference for female writers than the <Naoki Award>, which is recognized for its highest authority as a popular literary award. In addition, the <Kinobes(キノベス)> and the <Eiji Yoshikawa Literature Newcomer Award (吉川英治文学新人賞)>, which overlap a lot with the <Booksellers' Award>, were examined and the influencing relationships between the <Booksellers' Award> and these two awards were checked. In addition, it was considered that all the selected works for the last four years deal with the solidarity and healing between children who are abused and neglected at home and society and the weak and wounded. Lastly, it was expressed that the essence of the <Booksellers' Award> lies in its anti-rigorism, de-authority, and vividness unlike existing literary awards and that the true meaning of this award lies in sharing the pleasure of reading of bookseller’s clerks working at the front line of the reading world with readers through the event termed <Booksellers’ Award>.
