초록

「달그림자」(2006)는 서구의 신화와 한국의 시를 기본 틀로 타향에서의 방황과 죽음이라는 두 주요 주제를 다룬, 박영희(1945-)의 창작세계에 새로운 양상을 보여주는 오페라이다. 이 당시 작곡가는 이주한 서구에서 40여 년간의 작곡활동을 통해 작곡가로서 자신의 위치를 확고히 한 상태로서 지속적으로 미끄러지는 자신의 양가적 정체성에 대한 갈등을 내려놓고 인간의 삶과 죽음에 대한 대답을 시공간적으로 현실과 가장 먼 신화에서 찾으려 한다. 이 당시에 작곡된 곡들은 대체로 신화에 등장하는 여주인공들의 타향에서의 운명적인 죽음과 인간의 상처를 다루고 있다.
이 논문은 「달그림자」( 대본의 기저인 소포클레스의『콜로너스의 외디푸스』와 나중에 작곡가에 의해서 포함된『안티고네』가 어떻게 서로 연결되어 이제까지 자신의 작품에서 구현하려고 한 여성과 이주자로서의 경험, 즉 자신의 경험을 표출하고 있는지 분석한다. 또한 한병철의 시를 도교의 씨앗으로 보고 죽음에 대한 동양적인 해석을 위해 도입한 것이 전체적인 구조 안에서 어떻게 연결되는지도 살펴본다. 무엇보다도 한국의 시를 낭송하는 안티고네는 오페라의 장면과 장면이 서로 연결되는 중요한 위치에서 다양한 음악적 재현을 통해 아버지인 외디푸스를 죽음까지 동행하고 절대 군주인 크레온에 저항하며 오빠인 폴리네이케스도 땅에 묻어준다. 빈틈없이 짜여진 구조에서 안티고네의 목소리는 그녀 음악의 원형이자 여성의 경험을 표현하기 위해 만든 모계화음을 근본으로 한다. 이 논문의 목적은 가족을 위해 희생하고 죽음도 불사하는 '숭고한' 안티고네는 과연 누구인가라는 질문을 통해 달그림자에서 작동하고 있는 작곡가의 젠더/문화적 경험을 통해 습득한 다양한 전략을 촘촘히 드러내는 것이다. 마지막으로 여러 문화 안에서 오랫동안 갈등해온 작곡가가 이제는 대화법을 통해 서로 다른 이야기들과 등장인물의 다층적 목소리를 들려주는 접근법을 터득했으며, 그로 인해 그녀의 작품은 문화의 경계를 넘어서는 무한한 가능성을 가진 혼종성(hybridity)음악으로 다층의 공감대를 형성하고 있음을 보여준다.

영어초록

The opera Mondschatten (2006) marks a turning point in Younghi Pagh-Paan (1945-)’s compositional career, with her new choice of theme and direction in compositional approaches. As she deals with the theme of life and death in her works, Younghi Pagh-paan now turns her inspiration in a remote ancient western mythology and combines it with a Korean poem in dialogic mode. During her 40 years of living in a foreign land, Younghi has mostly dealt with her double minority identity as a woman and foreigner in her compositions. Now, with her revered position as a composer, she seems no longer dwell on her struggle of gender/cultural ambiguity in her identity, but instead tries to find different ways to portray her experiences as “the other”. She now appears to be interested in working on the theme that can be shared and understood regardless of their gender and cultural differences.
This paper first examines how the three different literatures are combined to reflect the composer’s new compositional approaches. In Mondschatten, with Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus as its matrix, she later includes Sophocles’ Antigone and Korean poet Han Byung-Chul’s poem “Wungeträumt”. Han’s poem portrays the teachings of Taoism that are related to the very moment of death at the end of the opera. Prominent appearances of Antigone at structurally and strategically important points in the opera, especially reciting stanzas of Korean poem, appear to be the focal point in the composition, bringing out several implications pertaining to culture and gender. Antigone has created so many controversies among philosophers and scholars in gender studies with her ‘sublime’ action of doing good deeds (such as caring for and protecting her self-blinded father Oedipus until his death and burying her brother Polyneikes in spite of Kreon’s death punishment). On the surface, the principal figure in the opera seems to be the father, as the plot itself proceeds around Oedipus’ wandering in a foreign land and death. However, Antigone, with her strategically significant placement, suggests that she may be the real protagonist, revealing her role of connecting three different stories and characters. Symbolically represented not only as a caring but also a strong-willed woman, Antigone may be the ‘mother’ of patriarchal societies, as her compositions usually deal with women’s oppression, or the mother of the composer who took care of her family after her father’s death. In this paper, I will explore roles of Antigone in various aspects, focusing especially on gender and cultural implications. In addition, her strategic connecting devices to dialogue with the other characters and different literary inspirations will be also ascertained.
