이상 시에 드러난 ‘피’와 ‘얼굴’ 그리고 ‘두개골’ 이미지의 유기성 연구 (Study on relationship between the images of blood, face and skull in Yi-Sang’s Poetry)

초록

이상 문학의 한 특성으로 여겨질 만큼 그의 문학에 빈번하게 드러나는 신체 기관의 분열이나 결핍‧ 과잉 현상은 세계와 관계 맺는 ‘나’의 태도와 긴밀히 연관된다. 이러한 그로테스크한 몸 이미지는 ‘병든 몸’의 형상화이자 ‘역동적인 몸’-‘생성하는 몸’으로 나아가기 위한 사투의 흔적으로 해석된다. 해체된 신체 기관의 형상화는 몸 공간으로부터 완전히 분열되지 않고 끊임없이 화자의 고통을 가중시킨다는 점에서 해소되지 않는 죽음의 공포를 드러내는 역할을 한다. 이때, 공포의 정념에 사로잡힌 화자는 ‘피’-‘얼굴’-‘두개골’과 같은 육체 쇄신의 상상 구도를 통해 병든 몸을 갱신하고자 시도한다. 표면상 대립적으로 보이는 세 이미지는 이상의 시작품에서 유기적으로 연결되어 존재의 근본적 지향점을 보여주는 축이 된다. 인체에 생명력을 불어넣는 ‘피’의 원형 상징은 이상의 작품에서 ‘악령’으로 드러나며, 자아의 정체성과 관련된 ‘얼굴’은 부패하고 변형되는 속성을 보이는 등 병든 몸의 고통은 이상의 작품에서 그로테스크한 이미지로 나타난다. 이러한 몸을 쇄신하고자하는 욕망은 곧 불변하는 ‘두개골’ 이미지를 호출하기에 이르고, 이상은 ‘두개골’과환유 관계를 맺는 ‘사유하는 몸’으로부터 존재의 본질을 찾으면서 절망감을 극복하고자 한다. 사유하고 기록하는 것이 지식인의 생존 방식 중 하나라면, 이상은 이를실천하고 수행하는 과정을 ‘두개골’로 이미지화함으로써 육체 쇄신의 욕망을 보여주고자 하는 것이다.
본고는 ‘피’ 이미지를 드러내는 시편들에서 육체의 쇄신 욕망을 발견하고, ‘두개골’ 이미지로부터 새로운 가능성으로서의 사유하는 몸의 세계를 드러내고자 한다.
<병든 ‘피’와 절망→쇄신 욕망→실패→유한한 ‘살’의 거세→몸의 본질을 드러내는‘뼈’의 발견→정신적 승화 과정→사유와 관련된 ‘두개골’ 형상화→육체적-정신적본질의 동일화>와 같은 단계는 이상의 몸 이미지만이 갖고 있는 독특한 지점이라할 수 있다. 이러한 해명 과정은 이상의 시를 바라보는 또 다른 시각을 제공할 것이라 예상한다.

영어초록

One of the most unique features of Yi-Sang’s poetry is the frequent descriptionof body images that are characterized by deprivation, disintegration or excess. Thisway of expression is closely related to the mental attitude he takes toward the world.
His body, often grotesquely depicted, illustrates his weak physical health and canbe interpreted as his struggle towards health that is reanimated and dynamic. Bydepicting the disintegration of organs that remain as part of his body, causingcontinuous pains, he wanted to show how he faces the enduring fear of death.
Being consumed by that fear, he attempts to restore and rejuvenate his physicalhealth by inserting the images of blood, face or skull. While these images may seemantithesis on the surface, they nonetheless are closely related in Yi-Sang’s poetryand serve as the pillars of the ultimate pursuit of his existence. In his work, theoriginal symbol of blood, which is the source of sustaining life, is expressed as anevil force. Yi-Sang also grotesquely shows his illness and pain he has to endureby illustrating twisted and decayed human face, which is the emblem of humanidentity. His desire for better and restored health is embodied in the image of skull.
He tries to overcome despair through his active pursuit towards the intellectual world,the metonymy of skull. Assuming that thinking and recording are the way of lifefor enlightened intellectuals, Yi-Sang clearly shows his desire for reformed physicalhealth by summarizing the process of action and practice into a simple image ofskull.
This study tries to identify desires for good physical shape in poetry that mentionblood and derive the intellectual world as new possibilities from the image of skull.
The stages from sickened blood and despair, to desire for restoration, to failure,to removal of finite flesh, to discovery of bone that is fundamental to physical body,to mental sublimation, to imaging of skull as intellectuality and to identification ofmental and physical world is the unique technique of expression that his work employs.
By looking into the stages, it is hopeful that this study will provide a new lensthrough which Yi-Sang’s poems are viewed and interpreted.
