증산계 신종교 일괄기술에 나타난 문제점과 개선 방향 (The Improvement on the Problems in the En Bloc Description of New Religions Derived from Jeungsan)

초록

신종교에 대한 기존 일괄기술은 신종교 전체의 ‘공통적’이라고 여겨지는 특성을나열한 뒤, 그에 대한 보충 설명을 목적으로 개별 신종교들에 대해 잠깐씩 언급하는정도에 그치는 경향이 있다. 하지만 그 공통이란 게, 각 개별 신종교들이 갖는 내용과 특징들을 하나씩 뽑아 뭉쳐놓은 것에 불과한 경우가 많다. 이러한 문제점은 ‘신종교’라는 단일 항목 기술에 대해서만이 아니라, 신종교에 속하는 ‘각 계열’에 대한 일괄기술에서도 발견된다.
예를 들어서 한국 신종교 가운데 가장 많은 분파를 가지고 있는 증산계의 경우,이에 속한 각 교단들은 증산에 대한 해석이나 신앙, 교리, 수행, 조직 등에서 각자의 입장을 고수하고 있다. 따라서 증산계 교단들에 대한 개별 분석을 토대로 유사점과차이점을 적절하게 구분하지 않으면 안 된다. 그러나 대부분의 증산계에 대한 일괄기술은 교단별 차이가 있다고 인정하면서도 특정 한두 교단, 주로 증산교본부 혹은 대순진리회의 입장을 증산계 전체의 그것으로 옮겨버리는 경우가 많다. 증산교본부는일찍부터 교리 통일을 주도해 온 교단이라는 점이, 대순진리회는 증산계 가운데 최대교단이라는 점이 그 이유였을 것이나, 증산계 특정 교단의 입장으로 증산계의 다른교단 또는 증산계 전체를 설명하려드는 시도는 바람직스럽지 않다. 이런 방식은 증산계 개별 교단들의 독자성과 고유성을 침해할 뿐만 아니라 증산계에 대한 바른 이해도 보장해주지 못한다.
더구나 증산계의 대표 사상이 해원상생이라고 알려져 있지만, 실제 해원이나 상생이념을 교리로 채택하고 있는 증산계 교단은 절반 정도에 그칠 뿐이다. 게다가 해원상생을 교리로 삼는 교단들조차도 그 사상의 이해 방식은 교단에 따라 무속⋅단군이념 혹은 동학사상이라는 틀을 이용하는 경우와 독창성을 강조하는 경우로 나뉘고 있다. 이러한 사실들이 증산계의 일괄기술에 전혀 반영되지 못하고 있기 때문에향후 개선이 필요해 보인다.
일괄기술은 증산계에 대한 대략적인 이해의 방향을 알려준다는 의미가 있기 때문에 반드시 필요하다. 다만 문제로 제기하고 싶은 것은 한국 신종교사의 정확한 이해와 기술을 위해서 증산계에 대한 일괄기술 시, 증산계 교단들의 다양성과 고유성을존중하여 공통점 대신 유사점과 차이점을 드러내려는 세밀한 태도를 유지해야 한다는 것이다.

영어초록

The existing en bloc description on Korean new religion ischaracterized by an intermittent mentioning of the ‘common’ traitsof each new religion for the sake of supplementary explanation, afterenumerating a trait which is regarded as ‘common’ for the wholenew religion. This problem is found not only in a single item descriptionon ‘new religion,’ but also in an en bloc description of each lineagepertaining to new religion.
For instance, in case of Jeungsan lineage(甑山系) which has thelargest number of affiliations among Korean new religion, each religiousorder clings to one’s own position in its interpretation on Jeungsan,faith, doctrine, practice or organization. Thus, it is important to differentiatethe similarity and distinction properly based on separate analysis onJeungsan line religious orders. Yet, in most of the descriptions onJeungsan lineage, there is a tendency to put the position of certainreligious orders, mainly that of Jeungsan-gyo(甑山敎) or Daesoonjinrihoe(大巡眞理會) together as that of the whole Jeungsan lineage.
Possible explanation can be found in the point that Jeungsangyo is areligious order which used to take the lead to unite the doctrine, whileDaesoonjinrihoe is the biggest religious order among Jeungsanlineage. Yet, this attempt to try to explain the other religious orderor the whole Jeungsan lineage with the position of a certain Jeungsanline religious order is not desirable. This way can neither guaranteea right understanding on Jeungsan lineage nor protecting the identityand peculiarity of each Jeungsan line religious orders.
Moreover, although the representative thought of Jeungsan lineageis Relieving the grievances for the mutual beneficence of all life, inreality only the half of Jeungsan line religious orders adopts the ideaof Relieving the grievances or mutual beneficence of all life as adoctrine. Besides, even among religious orders which regard Relievingthe grievances for the mutual beneficence of all life as their religiousdoctrines, the way of understanding the thought is divided into acase using the frame of shamanism, idea on Dangun(檀君) or Donghak(東學) thought, and a case dwelling on creativity. Since these factsare not reflected in an en bloc description on Jeungsan lineage, futureimprovement seems to be necessary.
The en bloc description is necessary in that it notifies the generaldirection of understanding on Jeungsan lineage. The only problem Iwould like to suggest is that, when describing Jeungsan lineage enbloc, we need to maintain a meticulous attitude to reveal similarityand difference rather than a concomitant feature, while respectingdiversity and identity of Jeungsan line religious orders, for the betterunderstanding and description on the history of Korean new religion.
