오늘날 가톨릭계 대학교수의 역할 (The Role of the Catholic University Professor Today)

초록

이 논문은 오늘날 교육에 종사하는 가톨릭계 대학교수들이 가톨릭적인 교육의 소명을 어떻게 가져야하는 지를 다루고 있다. 새로운 밀레니엄(millenium)시대인 오늘날은 과학기술, 정보통신 분야의 발달로 인간의 삶이 편리해졌지만, 반면에 그러한 문명의 이기들을 잘못 사용할 때에는 인간성의 상실과 엄청난 재앙이 예상된다. 물질과학문명의 발전과 아울러 정신문명의 발전이 뒷받침되어야 균형있는 발전을 이룩할 수 있다고 본다. 가톨릭 교회는 예수 그리스도에 의해 설립된 이래 초세기부터 종교교육과 인간교육을 중대한 관심을 갖고 실시해 오고 있다. 이제 예수 그리스도 탄생 2000주년을 기념하는 대희년을 전후하여, 최고의 교육기관인 대학교에서 교육을 맡고 있는 대학교수들의 역할에 대해 살펴봄은 큰 의의를 갖는다고 본다. 본 논문에서는 가톨릭 신자 교수들의 교육적 역할과 사명에 초점을 맞추어 주로 교회문헌들을 통해 고찰하였다. 가톨릭 교수들은 일반 교수들처럼 연구, 교육, 봉사의 직무를 수행하면서도, 가톨릭계 대학교의 제도적 정체성을 보존하고 학문과 교회와 사회발전에 큰 역할이 요청됨을 알 수 있다. 가톨릭 교수들은 21세기를 살아가고 있는 오늘날 과학기술의 발전과 더불어 세속화, 물질만능주의, 그리고 비인간화되어 가는 풍조 속에서 그리스도교의 복음적 가치를 학문적으로 수호하고 하느님과 인간에 대한 가치를 증진시키는데 큰 역할이 요청된다. 교수들은 대학 공동체의 수준 높은 구성원으로서 학문을 연구하고 학생들을 교육하며 그들의 학술강연과 견해표명으로 사회에 지대한 영향력을 행사할 수 있다. 그러므로 가톨릭 교수들은 자신의 학문 분야와 더불어 그리스도교 정신과 입장을 함양하여 신앙과 이성, 과학과 신앙의 관계를 정립하고 문화와 종교들 안에 내포된 보편적 가치들을 찾아내어 복음적 가치들로 승화시켜야 할 과제를 갖고 있다. 그리고 인간 사회의 소외되고 가난한 계층, 불의와 구조적 불균형으로 고통받는 이들의 인권을 개선하고 인간 세상을 하느님의 주권이 임하는 나라로 건설하며, 다같이 하느님의 축복 받는 사람들이 되도록 품위 있고 수준 높은 역할이 요구된다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper is to clarify the educational roles of the Catholic university professors conforming to the needs of the times. In the new millenium today the human life gets more and more easy and convient owing to the developpement of the scientific field and of the information technique. On the contrary it is expected that the wrong utilisation of such a modern convenience brings about terrible disaster and the loss of humanity. The symmetrical developpement of the human civilisation will get accomplished by the harmony of the material and the spirit.
The Catholic Church, since its establishment by Jesus Christ, carries out the religious education with a great concern. Now at the occasion of the Great Jubillee the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ, it is significant to explain the role of the professors engaging in education at the Catholic universities. This paper was examined with chiefly a nomber of the ecclesiastical documents adjusting the focus at the educational role and mission of the Catholic professors.
In the course of study, it was found that the Catholic professors perform three main duties such as recherch, education and service as the other professors. Moreover they are requested to protect the institutional identity of the Catholic universities, and to contribute to progress of the society, the Church and the learning world. The Catholic professors, living today the 21th century having tendency of secularisation, materialism and inhumanisation, are also called to guard scientifically the evangelical values of the Christianism, and to improve the value concerning God and man. The professors, as the member on a high intellectual level of the academic community, engage in studies, educate students, and exercise their great influences over the society through their scientific lectures and the expression of their opinions. Therefore the Catholic professors have the great task to sublime the universal values involving in the culture and the religion to the evangelical values, arranging the relation between the science and the faith, and between the faith and the raison, and also promoting their own scientific field and the Christian spirit. And they are also demanded to do their dignified roles on a high level so that all people could be blessed by God, constructing on earth the Kingdom of God, and improving the human rights of the poor, the alienated and the sufferer due to social injustice and structural inequality.
