A Collection of Paintings by Two Artists, Oh Chi-ho·Kim Chu-keung (the rest, called as A Collection of Paintings by two artists) started in 1938 was the first primary color art book in Korea. 10 works of Oh Chi-ho(1905-1982), Kim Chu-keung(1902-1981) respectively and a long piece of an essay on art are included in this book. Co-author Oh Chi-ho and Kim Chu-keung who had graduated from Tokyo Art School were major Artists of Korean modern art. Therefore, A Collection of Paintings by two artists can be an essential material to comprehend Korean art in the 1930’s. However a precedent study on A Collection of Paintings by Two Artists has been inattentive.
There is possibility for him to have an eye on an art book of his teacher, Fujishima Takeji published in 1934 for the conception of publishing his art book and he could be influenced by publication of Suk Ju-myeung, Lee Mu-young and others who had frequent communication with them. Above all things it is said the conception of publishing an art book was made to succeed the idea of popularization of the Joseon art and development of art of Rokhyang Association which was discontinued in 1931 with the 2nd meeting lastly.
A Collection of Paintings by Two Artists is a big art book of 2cm thickness, 35.5×26.5cm size including a total of 126 pages. The cover was printed with the gilt lettered title after pressing a brown paper on a thin board. An illustration side includes 20 color illustrations printed in Tokyo and there is a space for the proposition or the explanation as to the work in the front page. It carries 10 pages of Oh Chi-ho‘s art theory and 13 pages of Kim Chu-keung’s art theory.
A Collection of Paintings by Two Artists shows summarization of their art world in the 1930’s. The majority of the topic was a landscape of common nature of the Joseon. Through many examples, Oh Chi-ho especially did the harmonious composition of a painting about the actual view. Meanwhile, though it is not mentioned directly in art theory of A Collection of Paintings by Two Artists, ‘Expression of clear nature of the Joseon’ that he emphasized continuously after the liberation(from Japanese colonial rule) was composed from 1935. The life he emphasized in the realities of the Joseon during the Japanese colonial period was drawn and accepted as a theory in order to express the natural Joseon without Japanese colonial rule, the Joseon of clear nature and the Joseon of affirmation and hope.
A Collection of Paintings by Two Artists was a thick and luxurious art book that was introduced as ‘an original deluxe edition’ by Kim Yong-jun, Ryu Jin-ho, Ku Bon-woong in those days. This book was a nicely organized output like a thesis of works and art theory about their art world respectively. Though their piece of work before the liberation is no longer in existence, we can closely see the beginning of his landscape of clear nature of the Joseon and his art world in the 1930’s. Besides this art book as an initial primary color art book shows a sense of independence that people of the Joseon can do and one aspect of art movement for the development of the Joseon art at the time of no art theory books and proper art books. We can check that Oh Chi-ho and Kim Chu-keung who showed the aspect of a patriot and a pioneer after the liberation had actively participated in art activities through A Collection of Paintings by Two Artists before the liberation. Meanwhile, A Collection of Paintings by Two Artists can show a publication skill of the Joseon most at that time by means of bibliography history as they poured their efforts on making it.
