초록

경남 합천군 소재 법보종찰 해인사는 신라 애장왕 3년(802) 순응스님에 의해 창건되었다. 이후 이정․희랑․관혜․의천 등 고승 대덕이 해인사에 주석하면서 화엄을 중심으로 수행과 교화를 전승해 왔으며 화엄십찰로 자리매김 하였다.
이로 인해 해인사는 『三本華嚴經』을 비롯한 다양한 『화엄경』경전을 소장할 수 있었던 것이다.
이 글에서는 해인사 소장하고 있는 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』목판 3종을 연구하던 중 경남 남해 부소암 소장 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권53 인경본을 사례를 상호 비교 검토하면서 부소암 소장 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권53의 형태․서지학적 검토와 가치를 확인할 수 있었다.
남해 부소암은 대한불교조계종 10교구 영천 은해사 말사이며, 소장본 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권53 인경본은 국가지정문화재 보물 제1736호로 지정 관리되고 있다.
먼저 부소암 소장 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권53 인경본에 새겨진 외형적 형태와 서지학적 내용을 정리한 다음 書體, 函次, 刻手名 으로 비교 검토 기준을 확정하면서 현존하는 해인사 소장 3종 『대방광불화엄경 (진본)』을 비교 대상 경전으로 확정하였다. 부소암 인경본과 동일한 經典, 卷, 張을 확정하였으며 해당 권․장차가 부재시에는 동일한 경전에서 다른 권․장차와 서체를 비교하면서 동일 여부를 확인하였다. 그러던 중 해인사 소장 <사간 중복 065>로 분류된 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권51을 새롭게 확인되면서 비교 목판을 3종에서 4종으로 변경 확정하여 함께 비교 검토하였다.
부소암 소장 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권53의 가장 큰 특징 중 하나는 인경본에 새겨진 서체와 함차, 각수명 등으로 해인사에서 소장하고 있는 4종의 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』가운데 유일하게 <사간 중복 065>로 분류된 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권51이 형태․서지학적 특징으로 동일한 경판으로 확정할 수 있는 근거를 확보하였다.
그러면서도 숙종 3년(수창4, 1098)조성된 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권45이 해인사 스님인 시주로 조성하였다는 사실을 새롭게 확인하면서 고종 23년(1236) 국책사업으로 조성된 『팔만대장경』조성 시기보다 앞서 조상한 사실과 함께 이미 해인사에서는 경판을 조성할 수 있는 인적․물적 자원을 확보하고 있었음을 확인할 수 있다.
따라서 남해 부소암 소장 『대방광불화엄경(진본)』권53은 새롭게 발견된 인경본으로 현재 확인되는 한편 동일한 서지학적 특징을 가지고 있는 경판과의 관계와 함께 희소본의 가치도 확보하였다. 또한 해인사에서 분류되고 있는 사간판의 분류 체계를 재조사할 필요성과 향후 해당 경판을 복원하는데 있어서 원천텍스트로 활용할 수 있는 희소적 가치도 함께 확보하였다.

영어초록

Located at Hapcheon-gun, South Gyeongsang Province, Haeinsa Temple (Korea’s Dharma Jewel Temple) was established by Ven. Suneung in 802 in the 3rd year of the reign of Silla’s King Aejang. Presided by eminent resident monks such as Ijeong, Huirang, Gwanhye, and Uicheon, Haeinsa Temple continued practice and edification activities focused on Hwaeom (Avataṃsaka), eventually establishing itself as one of the ten major Hwaeom temples in Korea.
This status enabled Haeinsa Temple to secure and own diverse types and editions of the Avataṃsaka Sutra including the three types of the Avataṃsaka Sutra.
In this study I performed comparative research between the three types of woodblocks of the Avataṃsaka Sutra (Jin edition) owned by Haeinsa Temple and the printed copy of the Avataṃsaka Sutra (Jin edition) Vol. 53 owned by Busoam Hermitage in Namhae; and I investigated the external form, bibliography and values of the latter.
Busoam Hermitage in Namhae is a branch temple of Eunhaesa Temple in Yeongcheong, the head temple of the 10th district of the Jogye Order. The Avataṃsaka Sutra (Jin edition) Vol. 53, which it owns, has been designated as a general treasure by the Korean government.
First, I organized the external form and bibliographic content as appeared in the printed copy of the Avataṃsaka Sutra Vol. 53 (Jin edition, owned by Busoam), and established the categories of comparative investigation such as calligraphy styles, case IDs, and engraver names. As its comparison sutra, I chose the 3 types of the Avataṃsaka Sutra (Jin edition, owned by Haeinsa). From these three types, I tried to find the identical sutras, volumes, and chapters with the printed copy of Busoam; when corresponding volumes and chapters were not found, I consulted other volumes, chapters and calligraphy styles in the same sutra to check whether they are identical or not. In the midst of my study, I discovered the Avataṃsaka Sutra Vol. 51 (Jin edition, owned by Haeinsa), which was categorized as the “temple-produced duplicated woodblocks 065,” and I was able to expand my comparison sutras from the previous 3 types to the 4 types.
The most distinctive characteristics of the Avataṃsaka Sutra Vol. 53 (Jin edition, owned by Busoam) was the calligraphy style, case IDs, and engraver names of the printed copy; based on these characteristics I was able to confirm that this printed copy was the same sutra, in terms of form and bibliography, as the Avataṃsaka Sutra Vol. 51 (Jin edition, owned by Haeinsa), the only identical case among the 4 types of the Avataṃsaka Sutra (Jin edition) owned by Haeinsa.
I also newly discovered that the Avataṃsaka Sutra Vol. 45 (Jin edition, owned by Haeinsa) was produced in 1098 based on the donation of a monk at Haeinsa Temple, which was earlier than the production of the Tripitaka Koreana in 1236 as a national project. This confirms that Haeinsa had already secured sufficient human and material resources to inscribe scriptural woodblocks.
Accordingly, the Avataṃsaka Sutra Vol. 53 (Jin edition), owned by Busoam Hermitage in Namhae, has been confirmed as a newly discovered printed copy, and its value as a rare edition was confirmed along with its relation with the woodblocks which have identical bibliographic elements. I also found the need to reinvestigate the categorization system of temple-produced woodblocks at Haeinsa, and the printed copy of Busoam can be used as a source text when the corresponding woodblocks are restored in the future.
