    초록

The traditionalist reading of Reformation history has been received uncriticallyby churches in non-European continents including Korean churches. Thisimported traditionalist readings has been used to strengthen denominationalcompetition and schisms as well as cultural exclusivism against other religionsand indigenous cultures. Therefore, a critical reflection on the history of theReformation is one of the most urgent theological tasks for Korean churchescelebrating the 500 years anniversary of the Reformation.
In order to overcome the colonial domination of the traditionalist reading, first of all, this article is going to examine alternative readings and approaches togo beyond the traditionalist reading. Among them, the revisionist and post-revisionistreadings and the politico-economical readings of the Reformation will beexamined in order to get new insights on the Reformation. Finally, this articlewill try a new reading on the 16th century English Reformation focusing onlanguage.
The fact that English as a vernacular language had been elevated to the languageof scripture and worship in the Reformation period has three important meanings. First of all, it reveals that the Reformation was an opportunity tostrengthen not just a centripetal movement but a centrifugal diversification. Secondly, the elevation of English shows the missionary and pastoral aspects of theReformation. It meant that the subjects and cultures using the vernacular languagewere accepted as legitimized partners and members in religious and sociallife. Thirdly, it shows us the cultural and social transformation caused by theReformation. The Reformation was a movement against the exclusive monopolyof religious language and the monopolized clerical power mediating theologicalknowledge. Moreover, it was an assertion of the interpretative potential of thevernacular language English and its users. Therefore, the Reformation was atheological and cultural movement to reaffirm the life and experience of thosewho were linguistically and culturally silenced.
In order to rescue the history of Reformation from the very competitiveand divisive misuse, we have to concentrate more energy on the study of thosemissionary and pastoral aspects, and more comprehensive and dialogical aspectsof the Reformation.
