"게우사"의 작중극(作中劇) 기법과 서사적 효용 (A study on the narrative utility of a play within a play in Gewoosa)

초록

이 연구는 판소리계 소설인 <게우사>에 나타나는 작중극을 서사적 효용의 관점에서 살핀 것이다. 먼저 작중극의 통공시적 배경을 살피고, 이어서 작품에 나타난 작중극을 확인하였다. 이를 바탕으로 작중극의 서사적 효용을 검토하였다.
작중극 기법의 배경을 살폈다. 먼저 문학적인 배경을 확인하였다. 작중극은 소설이 난숙기에 접어들면서 나타났다. 이후로 가정소설이나 몽유소설, 그리고 영웅소설과 판소리계 소설에서 애용해 왔다. 그중에서도 판소리계소설의 작중극은 기존의 것과도 차이를 보인다. 기존의 작중극이 소재로 쓰였다면, 판소리계 소설에서는 서사전개의 핵심 요소로 활용했기 때문이다. 다음으로 사회문화적인 배경을 확인하였다. 작중극은 상층신분을 비판하는 장치로 유용했다. 그런데 <게우사>는 새롭게 부상한 유산계층의 문제를 고발한 작품이라서 독특성이 있다. 유산계층이 공동체의 구성원으로 기능하지 못하자 그들을 강력하게 비판할 목적에서 공격적인 작중극을 활용한 것이다.
작품에 나타난 작중극의 양상을 검토하였다. 먼저 작중극의 액자 구성 양상을 살폈다. 이 작품은 작중극을 통해 문제적인 인물을 효과적으로 비판·시정한다. 그런데 작품 초반의 서사는 문제를 제기하는 도입액자의 성격이 강하고, 문제를 해결하는 작중극은 내부액자의 성격이 강하다. 그리고 모든 문제의 해결로 화합을 도모하는 부분은 종결액자의 성격이 짙다. 이처럼 삼단의 액자구성을 통해 작중극을 배치하면서 서사적인 효과를 도모하였다. 다음으로 내외부액자의 적절한 대비 양상이다. 도입액자인 현실에서는 지속적으로 재화를 허비하는 문제가 단계적으로 확대되고, 내부액자인 작중극에서는 파멸의 과정이 단계적으로 강화된다. 양극단을 배치함으로써 작중극의 서사적인 효과를 제고하기 위함이다.
작중극의 서사적 효용을 확인하였다. 먼저 서사기법 면에서의 효용이다. 작중극은 현실 상황과 대비적인 내용을 다루면서 인물 간의 대결과 갈등을 증폭하고, 사건의 치밀성과 극단성도 조성한다. 평면적인 서술을 벗어나 긴장과 흥미를 가미한 표현도 주목할 만하다. 다음으로 주제 구현에서의 효용이다. 이 작품은 작중극으로 극단적인 대비를 보임으로써 문제가 명징하게 드러나도록 하고, 그 문제를 시정하는 데 초점을 두어 주제를 효과적으로 구현하고 있다. 이는 작중극을 통해 주제 구현을 용이하게 했음을 의미하는 바이다. 마지막으로 수용에서의 효용이다. 작중극은 연극적인 기법 중의 하나라서 대화가 발달함은 물론, 인물이나 사건에서도 변화를 주어 극적 긴장감을 조성한다. 풍자와 비판의 의도도 밀도 있게 진척되어 전반적으로 수용미학이 제고될 수 있다.

영어초록

This study examines the poetic drama in Pansori's novel Gewoosa from the perspective of narrative utility. First of all, I reviewed the synchronic and diachronic background of the play and then confirmed the play in the work. Based on this, the narrative utility of the drama was reviewed.
Examining the background of the theater technique. First, the literary background was confirmed. The play appeared as the novel entered its ripeness phase. It has been used in family novels, sleepwalking novels, hero novels and pansori novels. Among them, the pansori series novels were different from the existing ones. If a traditional play was used as a material, it was used as a key element in narrative development in Pansori novels. Next, the sociocultural background was confirmed. The play was useful as a device for criticizing the upper class. However, Gewoosa is a work that accuses the newly emerging issue of heritage. When the heritage group failed to function as a member of the community, it used an aggressive play for the purpose of strongly criticizing them.
The aspects of the play in the work were reviewed. First, I examined the frame composition of the play. This work effectively criticizes and corrects problematic characters through play. However, the narrative at the beginning of the work has a strong character of the introduction frame that raises the problem, and the play that solves the problem has a strong character of the internal frame. And the part that promotes unity by solving all the problems is the nature of the closing frame. In this way, the composition of the three-stage frame arrangement arranged the play to achieve an narrative effect. Next is the appropriate contrast between internal and external frame. In the case of the introduction frame, the problem of continually wasting goods expands gradually, and in the inner play frame, the process of destruction is stepped up. By arranging the extreme ends, it is intended to enhance the narrative effect of the play.
The narrative utility of the play was confirmed. First, it is useful in terms of narrative techniques. The play deals with the content of the situation and contrasts with each other to enhance the fight and conflict between the characters, and to create the compactness and extremeness of the event. It is also worth noting the expression that adds tension and interest beyond the flat description. Next it comes utility in the subject implementation. This work is an extreme contrast to the play, which makes the problem clearly visible and focuses on correcting the problem, effectively embodying the subject. This meant that the subject was facilitated through the play. Finally, it is useful in acceptance. The play is one of the theatrical techniques, which not only develops dialogue but also changes the characters and events, creating dramatic tension. The intentions of satire and criticism were also densely advanced, which improved the overall aesthetics of acceptance.
