劍에 대한 고고학적 상상 (An Archaeological Imagination of the Dagger)

초록

이 글은 검과 호를 한반도 청동기시대 내세관념의 상징물로 바라보면서 장송의례에서 검이 어떤 의미로 인식되었는지를 구체화해 본 것이다. 사회적 지위를 상징하는 위세품이자 의기로 여겨져 온 청동검 및 마제석검은 생전에는 신분 상징물이었더라도 사후의 장송의례에서는 다른 의미로 인식되었을 가능성을 검토할 필요가 있다. 적색마연호를 영혼의 호로 바라보는 관점의 연장선상에서라면, 영혼이 담긴 호를 보호하는 신령한힘을 지닌 무기로서의 기능을 떠올려 볼 수 있다. 이에 대한 고고학적 근거를 찾기 위해 검과 적색마연호의위치 관계를 살펴보니 대부분 서로 떨어진 위치에서 출토되었다. 이러한 양상은 장송의례에서의 검이 적색마연호를 보호하는 의미가 있었을 것이라는 생각과는 잘 부합하지 않는다. 검과 호가 서로 다른 위치에 놓이는양상은 각각에 담긴 관념에도 차이가 있었을 개연성을 생각하게 한다. 그래서 벽사와 영혼이라는 관점을 이어가면서 장송의례에서의 검에 대한 몇 가지 발상을 제기해 보았다. 첫째, 혼백의 관념을 적용하여 적색마연호가 망자의 혼을 천상으로 보내는 통로로서의 역할이라고 할 때, 신체에 인접해 있는 검은 육신을 떠난 백이지하 세계로 무사히 갈 수 있도록 지켜 주는 역할이라는 생각이다. 둘째, 분묘와 시신을 사악한 기운으로부터지킨다는 벽사의 기능으로서, 개석이나 벽석 등 신체와 동떨어진 곳에 놓인 검은 망자의 백이 있는 육신과 그공간인 분묘를 지키는 상징물일 것이라는 추정이다. 셋째, 장송의례에 사용된 검은 칼집 없이 날을 드러낸 채로 부장하였을 것이라는 생각이다. 의도적인 파검이나 벽석 사이에 꽂힌 검 등은 칼집의 존재를 생각하기 어렵다. 넷째, 김유신과 주몽의 보검 이야기처럼 고대 문헌에는 검의 신비성과 주술성이 묘사되어 있어 영검이자 신검으로서의 성격이 부여되었다. 특정의 검에 신성한 힘이 깃들어 있을 것이라는 인식의 연원을 찾아 거슬러 올라간다면 청동기시대 장송의례용의 단검에 다다르지 않을까.

영어초록

This paper looks at the dagger and the jar as objects symbolizing perceptions of the afterlife in the Bronze Age on the Korean Peninsula and considers the meaning of the dagger in funeral rites. It is easy to think that the bronze dagger or the stone dagger, which has been considered as an object symbolizing social status, was buried in a state of being worn around the waist; but it was not and has been excavated from various locations within the tomb. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the possibility that even if it was a status symbol during the owner’s lifetime, it came to be recognized in a different way in funeral rites after death. As an extension of the perspective of viewing the red burnished jar as the soul jar, it is possible to think of the dagger’s function as a weapon with divine power protecting the jar containing the soul. Looking at the location relationship between the dagger and the red burnished jar to find an archaeological basis for this, it can be observed that most of them were excavated from separate locations. This pattern is inconsistent with the idea that the dagger in funeral rites would have been meaningful in protecting the red burnished jar. The pattern in which the dagger and the jar are placed in different positions reminds us of the possibility that there was a difference in the idea contained in each. So, while continuing the perspective of ‘defeating evil’(辟邪) and soul, some ideas about the dagger in funeral rites were raised. First is the idea is that the dagger adjacent to the body protected the soul, allowing it to go to the underworld safely, given that the red burnished jar served as a passage for sending the soul of the dead to the sky. Second is the idea in which it is assumed that the dagger, which is separated from the body, is a symbol that protects the body and tomb from evil energy. Third is the idea that the dagger used in funeral rites was buried with the blade exposed and without a sheath. This is because the appearance of revealing the blade without a sheath is more appropriate for the magical notion that the object will exert spiritual power. Fourth is the idea of the mystery and magic of daggers, also described in ancient literature. Going back to the origin of the perception that the dagger contained divine power, one will arrive at the dagger used in funeral rites in the Bronze Age.
