한 개신교선교사 바라본 20세기 한국어문학장과 번역 -게일(James Scarth Gale)의 문체기획과 한국어 강좌를 중심으로 (A Protestant Missionary’s View on Korean Literary Field and Translation in the 20th Century)

초록

본고는 한국개신교 선교사 게일(James Scarh Gale, 1863~1937)이 바라본 20세기 한국어문학장과 번역의 문제를 고찰했다. 먼저, 그가 ‘번역자’로서 순한글 전용표기의 형태로 영미문학 작품을 『그리스도신문』에 소개했던 20세기 초반의 한국어문학장을 주목했다. 이 작품들은 경신학교의 교과서, 『유몽천자』에 국한문 혼용문으로도 수록되어 있었다. 비록 순한글 전용표기와 언문일치의 이상에 부합된 것은 아니었지만, 한국에서 국한문 혼용문체는 서양인들에게 보다 유용한 것이었다. 한국에서 한자․ 한문은 서구적인 문학 혹은 지식을 번역함에 있어, 한국의 고유어 혹은 구어보다 더욱 풍성한 표현과 용례를 지니고 있었기 때문이다. 둘째, 그가 ‘한국어학자’로서 한국어학 강좌를 연재했던 1917~1919년의 모습을 살폈다. 특히, 한국의 근대어에 관한 그의 강좌들을 주목했다. 이를 주목해보면 이 시기 한국어문학장은 20세기 초반과는 크게 변모되어 있었다. 19세기 말에서 20세기 초반 그가 대면했던 한국어문학장 속 한문고전의 위상은 소멸되고 있었다. 반면 구어의 영향력은 점차 증대되고 있었다. 무엇보다 일본어와 일본문학을 매개로 한 새로운 한국어가 출현하고 있었다. 이는 과거 한국의 한학자들을 문맹의 나락으로 떨어트릴 수준의 새로운 차원의 언어였다. 또한 과거 한국인이 상상할 수 없었던 서구적 사상과 문학을 번역할 수 있는 언어이기도 했다.

영어초록

This researcher considers the matters of Korean literary field and translation in the 20th century seen from a missionary of Korean Protestantism, James Scarth Gale (1863~1937). First of all, this study focuses on the field of Korean literature in the early 20th century, The Christian News(『그리스도신문』), in which he as a ‘translator’ introduced the works of English and American literature in a pure Korean-written form. These works are also contained in Gyeongsin School’s textbook, Yumongcheonja(『유몽천자』)), in the style that Korean and Chinese used in combination. Although this did not conform to the ideal of using pure Korean exclusively or unifying written and spoken language, the Korean and Chinese mixed up style was more useful to Westerners in Korea. It is because in Korea, Chinese or Chinese characters were equipped with more abundant expressions and examples than native words or spoken language in Korea in translating Western literature or knowledge. Second, this study looks into the aspects of 1917 to 1919 when he published the lectures of Korean linguistics serially as a ‘scholar of Korean language’. Particularly, this author pays attention to his lectures dealing with modern language in Korea. Considering that, we can find that the field of Korean literature in that period became significantly changed from the early 20th century. The status of the Chinese classics was getting lower in the field of Korean literature he was facing from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Meanwhile, the influence of spoken language was increasing gradually. Most of all, new Korean was emerging with the media of Japanese and Japanese literature. It was language in a new level that could fall the previous scholars of the Chinese classics in Korea into the bottomless pit of illiteracy. Also, it was language with which they could translate Western ideology and literature that Koreans had never been able to imagine before.
