아쿠타가와 류노스케(芥川龍之介)의「라쇼몽(羅生門)」고찰- 그 영화와 연극, 소설의 비교적 시점에서 - (Reflection on Akutagawa’s Rashomon - Comparative point of view towards the film, play and the novel –)

３つの異なったジャンルとして、それぞれに味わうことのできる作品「羅生門」は比較してみる価値がある。映画は、文学からその心理と思想の表現を学ぶ。小説は19世紀の人間の内面の表現という点で、最高の領域に到達した。しかし、映画は映像物という表現方法であって、文学のように自由自在にその心を詳細に描写するには限界がある。文芸映画は小説を映画化したことによって小説が描いたような心理を他の方法で描いていかなければならない。映画が小説と同じ方法でない別の方法でしか人間を描けないことの発見、それが映画芸術の発展に寄与することになり、小説の言語的な空間を現実化させる。そして演劇は何よりも、観客との呼吸が重要に作用するしかない。それで劇的な緊張感をずっと維持するのに無理がある。したがって、原作(映画)にはないユーモアや他の要素、云わば衣装や扮装、セットなどが舞台に置かれることによってその緊張感の重さを少しでも減らすことになるユニークな味がある。 芥川は「侏儒の言葉」(1927)の中の'鑑賞'という項目で'芸術の鑑賞は芸術家自身と鑑賞家との協力である。いわば鑑賞家は１つの作品を課題に彼自身の創作を試みるのに過ぎない。この故にいかなる時代にも名声を失わない作品は必ず種々の鑑賞を可能にする特色を具えている'と記している。この言葉は、優秀な芸術は必ず多義的な鑑賞が成立しなければならないということを表す言葉である。そして彼の理念の反映されたのが彼の作品であるとすれば彼は成功したわけである。そしてその作品を選択し、脚色して映画や演劇として作った演出家や監督たちもやはりこのような作家の観点に同感した人たちだったのであろう。1915年に小説「羅生門」が発表されて以来、映画で、また演劇で作られている理由はその原作が持っている時代を超えた人間に関する普遍性の問題を扱っているという点からだろう。特に人間に内在されている人格の多層性、そしてそれをめぐっている皮肉な現実はどの時代を問わず、人間に与えられた運命である。その運命の力を鋭い目で観察してから想像の力で書いていく作家の筆力にもう一度感動することになる。ビジュアル(visual)という強い力を持つ大衆媒体という点で小説より映画や演劇の与える妙味がもっとあるかもしれないが、作品を終わりまで読む過程から純粋な読者の想像力を前提とする'小説'の魅力はより振幅が大きいという事実は確かであろう。

영어초록

Rashomon, The purpose of this paper is to conduct research on Rashomon as a work that can be appreciated in three different genres, namely, novel, film, and play. Films adopt psychological and ideological expressions from literature. Novels have reached their prime in the 19th century as an expression of inner workings of the human mind. Unlike literature, however, films have limited freedom in depicting human mentality in minute detail. Through dramatization, literary films must seek a different way of illustration from original novels. The discovery that films cannot portray humans the same way that novels do eventually contributes to the advancement of film art and translates into reality the linguistic space created by literature. Also, a play depends heavily on the interaction with its audience, so it is difficult to keep dramatic tension consistent throughout. Therefore, the tension is partially removed through comic relief and other elements such as costumes, make up and sets, which are absent from the original film. According to Akutagawa, appreciation of art is like cooperation between the artist himself and the appreciator. That is, the appreciator merely attempts his or her own creation on the artwork as a task. A work renowned at all times is necessarily attributed with features that call for a variety of impressions. Excellent art must allow for polysemantic criticism. If it was Akutagawa’s intention to reflect such idea through his works, he was successful. Producers or directors who have selected to adapt this piece of literature into a film or play must have shared the same view. The reason for the novel Rashomon’s film and play adaptations ever since its release in 1915 is because of the original work’s emphasis on the universality of human nature transcending time. In particular, the humanity is destined to face the multifaceted nature of human character and the ironic reality surrounding it, regardless of time. Films or plays are attractive in their own way, showing strength as mass media with strong visual appeal. Yet, appreciating again the author’s keen observation on such destiny and imagination-driven power of writing, a novel as a medium based on the premise of readers’ pure imagination until the end will certainly present a much deeper resonance.
