영암 자라봉고분 출토 슬래그를 통해 본 5~6세기 영산강유역 철기생산과 유통 (The Study Done through the Slag Excavated from Jarabong ancient tomb, Yeongam on the Ironware Manufacturing and Distribution in the Yeongsan River Basin between 5C and 6C)

초록

본 연구는 영암 자라봉고분에서 출토된 슬래그와 동시기 영산강유역 철기생산유적 간의 관계성에 대한 고고학적 가설을 설정하고 금속학적 분석결과를 토대로 이를 검증해 보았다. 먼저 자라봉고분에서 출토된 슬래그의 생산지를 추정하는 과정에서 동시기 대표적인 철기생산공방인 나주 복암리유적, 광주 오선동유적의 관련 자료와 직·간접적인 비교 검토하였다. 이를 통해 복암리유적에서 출토된 슬래그와의 유사성이 강하다는 것을 확인하고 금속학적 분석을 통해 이를 검증하였다. 또한 5~6세기 영산강유역의 철기생산유적의 유구와 유물을 재검토하여 각 유적의 생산공정을 복원하고 그간 논의되어온 5~6세기 영산강유역 철기생산과 유통에 관한 몇 가지 새로운 가설을 정립하였다. 그 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다.
1. 영암 자라봉고분 슬래그는 정련단야공정의 산물로서 5~6세기 영산강 중류역의 복암리 철기생산공방과 관련된 것으로 추정하였다.
2. 소형 할석의 일면에 슬래그가 고착된 특징은 복암리유적의 정련(정련단야)공정에서 보이는 특징으로 영산강 중류역의 독자적인 특징으로 판단된다.
3. 5세기 중엽 이후 영산강유역의 철기 생산과 유통구조는 중상류지역이 하나의 맥락 속에서 상호 관계를 유지하였다고 단정 짓기 어렵다.
4. 5~6세기 영산강유역의 철기생산과 유통구조는 상위공정에서 하위공정으로 생산·유통되는 체제뿐만 아니라 지역사회 간의 상호관계 속에 집단 간에 유통되기도 한다.
5. 영암 자라봉고분 내 슬래그 공헌은 지역사회와의 상호 관계 속에 생산·유통되는 사례의 하나이다.
이상의 분석결과는 유적의 사례에 근거한 것으로 시론에 불과하다. 몇몇 유적에서 보이는 유사성만으로 일정시기의 철기생산과 유통구조를 단정적으로 논하는 것은 위험할 수 있다. 그럼에도 철기생산과 관련된 연구는 학제 간의 융합된 연구 방향으로 진행되어야 하고 이는 고고학 자료를 더욱 객관화하는 방법일 것이다.

영어초록

The study set the archeological hypothesis on the relation between the slag excavated from Jarabong ancient tomb, Yeongam and the ironware manufacturing remains in the Yeongsan River basin in the same period and verified the hypothesis on the basis of the metallurgical analysis result.
During the process of estimating the production area of the slag excavated from Jarabong tomb, it was checked that there was a strong similarity to the slag excavated from the remains in the site at Bogam-ri through the direct and indirect comparison with the relevant materials on the ironware manufacturing workshops in the same period including the remains in the site at Bogam-ri, Naju and in Oseon-dong, Gwangju, and it was verified though the metallurgical analysis. Moreover, the production process of individual remains was restored by reviewing the relics and artifacts of the ironware manufacturing remains in the Yeongsan River basin between 5C and 6C, and several new hypotheses having been discussed on the ironware manufacturing and distribution in the Yeongsan River basin between 5C and 6C. the details are summarized as follows.
1. The slag of Jarabong, Yeongam is produced from the smelting blacksmith process, and the ironware manufacturing workshop in the midstream area of the Yeongsan River between 5C and 6C is considered to be the production area.
2. The characteristics with the slag fixed to one surface of the broken stone are shown in the refining (smelting blacksmith) process and are decided to be unique in the midstream region of the Yeongsan River.
3. It is difficult to decide that the ironware production and distribution structures in the Yeongsan River after the mid-fifth century maintained the mutual relation in one context in the midstream and upstream regions.
4. The various aspects of distribution existed with the interrelationship with the regional society beyond the structure of ironware production and distribution from the upper process to the lower process in the Yeongsan River region between 5C and 6C.
5. The slag contribution within Jarabong, Yeongam is one of the cases of the production and distribution in the interrelationship with the community.
The above analysis result is based on the few remains cases and is just a public opinion. It may be dangerous to discuss the ironware production and the distribution structure in the fixed time period only with the similarity shown in some remains. Notwithstanding, the study on ironware manufacturing should be done in the direction of interdisciplinary integrated research, and it is one of the methods for objectifying archeological specimens further.
