초록

이 글의 목적은 섬진강 상류의 취락 자료를 검토하여 1∼6세기 지역 정치체의 성장과 변동 양상을 파악하는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 기존의 연구성과를 바탕으로 섬진강 상류의 범위와 취락의 단계 설정을 시도하고, 개별 주거의 면적과 취락 규모, 그리고 주거의 평면형태와 분포양상을 분석하여 섬진강 상류의 정치체 성장 및 시공간적 변화상을 추론해 보고자 하였다. 그 결과 단일 취락 내, 취락 간 사회 구조의 성장과 변동의 모습을 살필 수 있었고, 물질문화의 분포 차이가 정치체의 아이덴티티와 관련됨을 유추해 볼 수 있었다.
개별 주거의 면적 변화는 취락 내 구성원 간 위계의 심화를 보여 주는 것으로 파악되었다. 방형계 취락 Ⅱ단계는 Ⅰ단계와 비교해 보았을 때, 주거 규모의 평균값이 낮은 한편으로 면적의 분포 범위의 폭이 넓은데, 이는 큰 면적의 주거지가 집단 내 위계가 높은 소수 구성원에게 집중되었을 가능성을 시사한다.
다음으로 취락 분포 정형 검토를 통해 지역 정치체의 존립과 변동 양상을 알 수 있었다. 취락 Ⅰ단계는 중·소 규모의 소촌이 형성·발전하는 시기로, 곡성 오지리 유적, 임실 갈마리 해평 유적처럼 규모 면에서 두드러지는 취락이 등장한다. 취락 Ⅱ단계가 되면 Ⅰ단계에 큰 규모를 형성한 유적이 지속적 성장을 통해 소촌(순창 노동리 유적)-촌(순창 대가리 향가 유적), 소촌(임실 상신리B 유적)-대촌(임실 갈마리 해평 유적), 촌(남원 세전리 유적)-대촌(남원 향교동 유적)의 취락 분포 구조가 체계화된다. 취락 Ⅲ단계에는 외부 세력과의 관계성 확대로 물질문화가 유입되며, 변화하는 세계 속에서 기존의 취락 사회는 구조에 변화가 나타난다. 특히 임실 석두리 유적과 같은 교통의 결절지에 위치하는 취락이 성장하게 되고, 백제의 유입으로 Ⅱ단계의 대형 취락이 연속성을 유지하지 못하는 한편, 그 주변으로 새로운 취락이 형성되는 결과를 낳게 되기도 한다.
마지막으로 주거 평면형태의 차이는 정치체의 아이덴티티(正體性, identity)를 보여주는 것으로 이해된다. 동시기에 주거지의 평면형태에서 차이가 나타나는 순창·임실과 남원·곡성 지역은 기층문화가 다른 두 사회가 맞닿아 있는 접경지대로 판단되며, 이후 시기에는 백제, 가야, 신라가 교류 및 쟁탈을 벌이는 과정에서 문화가 융합·창출되던 재생산의 공간이었을 가능성이 컸음을 추측해 볼 수 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to find out the growth and changes in the local political system from the 1st to the 6th centuries by reviewing residence and settlement data on the upper area of Seomjin River. To this end, this study attempted to set the scope and stage of settlements in the upper area of the Seomjin River based on existing research results, and analyzed the area of individual residences, the size of the settlements, and the floor shape and distribution pattern of the residences in order to look into the growth in political system and the changes in time and space in the upper area of Seomjin River. As a result, this study was able to examine the growth and changes in social structure within a settlement and between settlements, and infer that differences in the distribution of material culture are related to the identity of the political systyem.
Changes in the area of individual residences were found to show a deepening hierarchy among members within the settlement. Compared to Stage I, Stage II of square settlements shows the average housing scale is low, while the distribution range of the area is wide, which suggests that large-area settlements might be concentrated on a few members with high hierarchy within the group.
Next, the existence and change patterns of the local political system was found through a review of the settlement distribution pattern. Settlement Stage 1 is a period in which small and medium-sized Sochon (small villages) were formed and developed, and villages with noticeable scale appeared, including Gokseng Ojiri Site and Imsil Galmari Haepyeong Site. In the settlement Stage Ⅱ, the large-scale sites that were formed in Stage Ⅰ continued to grow and showed the systematic settlement distribution structure: Sochon (small villages: Sunchang Nodongri Site)-Chon (villages: Sunchang Daegari Hyangga Site), Sochon (small villages: Imsil Sangsinri B Site)-Daechon (large villages: Imsil Galmari Haepyeong Site), and Chon (villages: Namwon Sejeonri Site)-Daechon (large villlages: Namwon Hyanggyo-dong site). In the settlement Stage III, material culture was introduced due to the expansion of relationships with external forces, as well as changes in the structure of the existing settlement society in a changing world. In particular, settlements located in transport nodes grew such as the Imsil Seokdu-ri Site, and with the introduction of Baekje, large-scale settlements of Stage II were unable to maintain continuity, resulting in the formation of new settlements around them.
Lastly, differences in the floor shapes of residences are thought to have shown the identity of the political system. During the same time, Sunchang·Imsil and Namwon·Gokseong areas, which showed differences in the floor shapes of residential areas, are considered to be the border between two societies whose different underlying cultures met, and in the later period, as Baekje, Gaya, and Silla exchanged and struggled, they could be a space of reproduction where cultures were combined and created.
