BIG 회계법인과의 제휴가 국내감사인의 인증가치에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of the Association with BIG on the Affiliated Local Auditor’s Assurance Value)

초록

본 연구는 국내감사인과 국제적으로 명성 있는 BIG 감사인과의 제휴관계에 관한 연구이다. 국내감사시장에서 BIG과의 제휴관계는 국내제휴감사인에게 명성을 부여해 왔고, 그로 인해 국내제휴감사인은 명성 있는 감사인으로서의 지위와 혜택을 누려 왔다. 이를 뒤집어 보면, 국내감사시장에서 BIG과의 제휴종결은 곧 명성상실을 의미하는 것이 된다. 본 연구에서는 BIG과의 제휴종결이 발표되었을 때, 국내제휴감사인의 고객기업 주가가 하락하는지를 검증하고자 한다. 본 연구는 감사인의 명성훼손이 기업가치하락으로 이어진다는 일련의 연구흐름과 관련된 연구이며, BIG의 명성효과가 국내감사시장에서 제휴감사인을 통해서도 구현되는지를 검증해 본다는 의미를 지닌다.
본 연구는 국내감사시장에서 BIG과의 제휴종결에 관한 사례를 연구대상으로 하여 고객기업의 주가반응을 검증한다. 구체적으로 Deloitte Touche & Tohmatsu(DTT)와의 제휴종결소식이 보도되었을 때 그와 제휴한 안건회계법인이 감사하고 있는 고객기업의 주가가 하락하는지 검증하고, Arthur Anderson(AA)의 명성훼손에 관한 보도가 나왔을 때 국내제휴감사인인 안진회계법인이 감사하고 있는 고객기업의 주가가 하락하는지 검증한다. 검증결과, DTT와의 제휴종결소식이 보도되었을 때 안건의 고객기업 주가는 하락하였다. 그에 반해, AA자체의 명성훼손이 있었던 날에 국내제휴사인 안진의 고객기업 주가가 하락한 증거는 확신하기 어려웠다.
그리고 안건의 고객기업에게서 발견된 음의 주가반응은 다른 국내제휴감사인에게서는 발견되지 않았으며, 이익조정정도가 클수록, 기업규모가 작을수록, 공격적인 회계선택을 하는 기업일수록, 건설업종에 속하는 기업일수록 주가하락의 정도가 심한 것으로 나타났다.

영어초록

This study is about the association effect of local accounting firms with internationally reputable BIG accounting firms. In Korean audit market, the association with BIGs is reckoned to give the reputation to the affiliated local auditors. In fact, the affiliated Korean auditors seem to enjoy the status and benefit as reputable auditors. Conversely speaking, the termination of the relationship with a BIG may indicate the reputation loss of the affiliated local auditor in Korean audit market. This study, therefore, focuses on testing whether the stock price of the clients audited by the affiliated local accounting firms declines when the association with BIGs is reported or expected to come to an end. It is in line with prior research on the stock market effect of auditors' reputation loss, but our study's main concern is the stock market reaction caused by the termination of the association with BIGs. In other words, we test whether the reputation effect of BIGs exist in Korean market through the affiliated local auditors.
We examine two cases for the study. First, we investigate, when Deloitte Touche & Tohmatsu (DTT) unilaterally announced the termination of the association with Ankun accounting firm in 2001, whether Ankun's clients experienced significant stock price decline. Second, we test whether the assurance value of Anjin accounting firm, the Arthur Anderson's (AA) Korean partner in 2002, were also deteriorated on event dates when AA's reputation was damaged following the Enron scandal. We find that the stock price of Ankun's clients significantly fell when news about the end of the partnership between Ankun and DTT were released to the market. However, investors did not seem to impose a penalty on the clients of Anjin from AA's reputation loss. We also find that the negative stock market reaction to Ankun's clients was not spilled over to other affiliated local auditors, and was bigger for firms with larger magnitude of discretionary accruals, smaller size, aggressive accounting policy and in construction industry.
