자본조달순서이론과 상충이론 간의 검정력 비교 (Comparing the Testing Power between Pecking Order Theory and Trade-off Theory)

초록

본 연구에서는 2000년 1월 1일부터 2010년 12월 31일까지 한국거래소의 유가증권시장에 상장된 기업을 대상으로 부채수용력을 고려한 자본조달순서이론과 상충이론 간의 검정력을 비교하였으며, 주요한 결과는 다음과 같다.
자본조달순서 변수 중에서, 재무적자 비율은 순부채발행 비율에 양(+)의 영향을 미치고, 재무적자 비율제곱은 음(-)의 영향을 미치지만, 상충이론 변수 중에서, 유형자산 비율 변화와 기업규모 변화는 순부채발행 비율에 양(+)의 영향을 미치고, 수익성 비율 변화와 MB 비율 변화는 음(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 Shyam-Sunder and Myers(1999)의 주장과 달리, 자본조달순서이론이 상충이론의 영향력을 완전히 상쇄하지 못함을 의미한다. 그리고 기업의 부채수용력을 고려하더라도 자본조달순서이론이 상충이론의 영향력을 완전히 상쇄하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 나아가, 규모효과나 재벌효과를 고려하더라도 자본조달순서이론이 상충이론의 영향력을 완전히 상쇄하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다.
결론적으로, 자본조달순서이론은 상충이론을 완전히 대체할 수 있는 자본구조이론이라고 할 수 없다. 자본조달순서이론은 기업의 자본조달행위를 부분적으로 설명하지만, 나머지 많은 부분은 상충이론으로 설명할 수 있다. 즉, 자본조달순서 변수인 재무적자 비율이나 재무적자 비율제곱은 수많은 자본구조변수 중의 일부라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 경영자들이 자본조달결정을 할 때 자본조달순서이론과 상충이론 중에서 어느 한 쪽만 고려할 것이 아니라 양 쪽을 상호보완적으로 고려할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, we compare empirically the testing power between pecking order theory and tradeoff theory of firms listed on Korea Exchange. Because the pecking order theory is a potential competitor to the tradeoff theory, it is necessary to compare the relative testing powers between the two theories. Sample firms are classified into the high debt capacity firms and the low debt capacity ones, and the small and medium firms and the large ones, and they are also classified into the Chaebol firms. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows.
If the pecking order theory variables such as the financing deficit and the square of the financing deficit are the key drivers, they should wipe out the effects of tradeoff theory variables such as tangibility, profitability, market-to-book assets ratio, and firm size. But it does not do so. Adding the pecking order variables to the tradeoff theory variables does not have much effects on the magnitudes and significances of the coefficients on the tradeoff theory variables. In the nested model that includes the pecking order variables and the tradeoff theory variables, the financing deficit and the square of the financing deficit add a small amount of extra explanatory power, but they do not change the role of the tradeoff theory variables. Hence, the informations in the financing deficit and the square of the financing deficit appear to be factored in along with many other tradeoff theory variables that firms take into account. This is true across debt capacity, firm size, and Chaebol firms. If the financing deficit and the square of the financing deficit are simply a few part among many other tradeoff theory variables, then what is left is a generalized version of the tradeoff theory.
