No Asian Child and Parent Left Behind?: Asian-American Parental Involvement and Child Achievement

The purpose of this study was to investigate the degree to which Asian and White parents were involved in their children's education, and the ways in which they were engaged. This study examined the effect of parental involvement on children's education during kindergarten and first grade and the factors to explain the types and degrees of Asian parents’ involvement with their children’s education in both in school and at home, comparing with White parents. Further, this study investigated the relative importance of these factors to parental involvement and the relative influence of home versus school parental involvement behaviors on children's school achievement. Data for this study came from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 [ECLS-K]. The analytical sample drew only data from Asian and White (non-Hispanic) children and their parents in kindergarten and grade 1(N=6599). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, and multiple regression methods. The result of this study found that Asian-American parents tended to be less heavily involved in their children’s education both at home and at school than were White parents. Asian-American students performed better than Whites in reading and equally well in math achievement in kindergarten; but, by the end of grade 1, their achievement gap tended to be small. The effects of parental involvement on academic achievement were mixed with positive effect of school involvement and negative effect of home involvement.
