1. 서 론
1.1 연구의 목적 및 필요성
20세기 기능주의 건축 경향과 마천루의 등장은 공간의 용도와 구조, 형태, 미적 가치 등에 결정적 영향을 끼쳤다. 이에 따라 건축물을 구성하는 세부 공간들의 위계에 도 변화가 일어났다. 건축 공간 내에도 소위 중심과 주변 관계가 나타나게 된 것이다. 이에 따라 계단은 소외된 공 간으로 전락하였다.
그러나 계단은 역사적으로 건축공간을 풍성하게 만드 는 데 중요한 역할을 하였으며, 오늘날에도 일상세계에 잠재된 새로움을 드러내는 공간으로 가능성을 지닌다. 오랜 시간동안 계단은 공간을 연결·확장하는 건축요소이자, 기존의 건축 질서에 질적 새로움과 윤택함을 가져오는 수단이기도 하였다. 계단은 거주자의 감각과 지각, 더 나 아가 행위와 관계하며, 정신적 흐름인 감정을 논리적인 건축 형식을 통해 형상화한다. 다시 말해 기능적 도구이 면서, 존재자들이 함께 살아가는 공동세계의 질을 창의적 으로 표현하는 상징이기도 한 것이다.
일부 근현대건축은 계단을 공간의 수익성·생산성에 저해되는 공용부문으로 간주해왔다. 그러나 창조적 건축 을 위해서는 이러한 목적론적 관점에서 벗어날 필요가 있다. 건물과 계단을 공간의 총체적 질적 흐름을 공유하는 전체와 부분이라는 해석학적 관점에서 바라볼 필요가 있다.
이 같은 필요성을 바탕으로 이 연구는 현대건축에서 계단이 가질 수 있는 다채로운 측면과 가능성을 살펴보 고 이를 위한 예로써 김수근의 공간사옥 계단에 대한 해석을 시도하고자 한다. 이를 통해 계단이 지니는 핵심기 능인 건물 내 동적순환의 기능을 바탕으로 각기 다른 공 동세계가 가지는 삶의 고유성이 어떻게 표현되는지를 알 아보는 것을 목적으로 삼는다.
공간사옥은 김수근 자신과 공간그룹을 위한 건물이었다. 이에 건축가 자신이 추구한 가치들을 좀 더 자유롭게 표현할 수 있었을 것이라고 유추할 수 있다. 특히 이 작품은 전통적 이미지들이 건축형태에 융화되는 과도기적 모습을 보인다고 알려졌다(Jeong, 1996). 한 건축가의 특정 작품을 연구 대상으로 삼는 것에는 분명 연구의 한계가 있다.
