Ⅰ. 서 론

생후 2~3년에 이르는 영아기는 생애 발달적인 측면에서는 매우 짧은 시기이지만 신체적, 사회적, 정서적, 인지적 발달이 급속도로 진행되는 시기로, 유능한 영아(competent infant)` 라는 용어(Friedman & Vietze, 1973)가 사용될 정도로 이 시기 영아의 능력이 새롭게 부각되고 있다. 특히 자신의 의도와 요구를 표현하고 상대방의 행동에 영향을 미치려는 영아의 상호작용적인 능력에 관심이 모아지고 있다(김주아, 2008).
영아기의 언어는 비언어적 형태의 의사소통으로 시작되어 언어적 형태의 의사소통으로 급속히 발달한다. 성인과 같은 수준의 언어는 아니나, 의사소통의 기능을 하는 준언어적(paralinguistic), 혹은 전언어적(prelinguistic) 형태로는 울음, 표정, 옹알이, 미소, 그리고 몸짓 등이 있다. 이러한 전언어적인 의사소통 형태는 언어 사용 훨씬 이전부터 발달된다(김영실, 김진영, 김소양, 2006). 아직 언어 능력이 충분히 발달 되지 않은 상태의 영아에게 이러한 비언어적 의사소통 수단은 주위로부터 정보를 받아들이고 자신의 의사를 주위 사람에게 전달하는 중요한 도구가 된다.

하위영역별로는, 표상적 몸짓과 기질의 주의지속성 간에 통계적으로 유의미한 정적 상관관계가 났다. 영아는 월령이 증가할수록 장난감을 빨거나 두들기는데 그치지 않고 장난감이 가진 특정한 기능의 활용에 주의를 기울이기 시작한다(Fenson & Ramsey, 1981). 12개월 정도부터는 놀이를 할 때 주위로 부터의 특별한 개입이나 상황의 변화 없이도 하고 있던 놀이를 지속할 수 있으며 놀이도 상징적이 된다. 자신이 가지고 놀고 있는 놀잇감이나 상황에 대해 지속적으로 탐색하고 관찰하면서 영아는 놀잇감이나 상황의 특징을 파악하게 되고 그 결과 표상적 몸짓으로 표현하는 것이 가능하게 된다. 이러한 이유로 표상적 몸짓과 기질의 주의지속성 간에 정적 상관이 나타난 것이라 여겨진다.
관습적 몸짓도 기질의 주의지속성과 통계적으로 유의미한 정적 상관관계가 있었다. 이는 주의지속성이 높은 영아들이 다른 사람의 말을 끝까지 경청하고 귀 기울여 수용하는 기회가 더 많아 관습적 몸짓인 손 흔들기(안녕), 고개 가로젓기(아니요), 고개 끄덕이기(네)를 상황에 적절하게, 그리고 더 많이 사용할 수 있기 때문일 것이다.
